Cops on Cops Video - Bergen County cops vs a State Trooper
« on: August 29, 2013, 10:29:59 PM »
http://www.northjersey.com/news/bergen/Two_Bergen_County_cops_disciplined_after_confrontation_with_trooper_caught_on_video.html

A New Jersey state trooper — mindful of a string of carjackings by police impersonators — walks up behind an unmarked minivan with flashing lights that has pulled a motorist over on southbound Route 95 in Leonia. The trooper briefly draws his sidearm, puts it back in his holster, but keeps his hand poised on the butt of the gun.

This screengrab from a camera in a State Police cruiser shows part of the confrontation between the Bergen County Police and a trooper.
STATE POLICE. This screengrab from a camera in a State Police cruiser shows part of the confrontation between the Bergen County Police and a trooper.

A man wearing a bulletproof vest — and with a handgun tucked into his rear waistband — identifies himself as a Bergen County Police officer and later begins berating the trooper.

“Get the [expletive] out of here,” says the officer, whose supervisor walks up and joins the intense verbal fray.

The trooper stands his ground, thumping one hand to the badge on his uniform and briefly taking off his cap. After a few minutes that include a chest bump and a lot more cursing by all involved, the trooper returns to his vehicle and later files his report.

That report and the raw expletive-laden 12-minute video taken by the trooper’s dashboard video camera, triggered an internal investigation that resulted in Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan imposing an unspecified disciplinary action against the two unidentified county officers.

“The officers have been disciplined according to department procedures,” Jeanne Baratta, Donovan’s chief of staff, said Thursday. She said state attorney general guidelines prevent the county from detailing the specifics of the disciplinary actions. She said the discipline was imposed immediately after the internal affairs investigation concluded this summer.

The release of the video — obtained by The Record this week through a public records request — comes as a contentious debate over the future of the county police force — and whether it should be merged with the Sheriff’s Office — has been revived. It also comes as separate investigations by the county police and Sheriff’s Office are looking into a traffic stop in which a sheriff’s officer pulled over Freeholder Maura DeNicola, who has opposed the merger.

These cops really went at it. Was it because the trooper was white, and the other cops were of color?

Maybe because WTF are plainclothes cops in a freaking minivan stopping a car for a traffic stop on a Freeway, which is clearly the state troopers territory.  It looks like they were targeting this car for political reasons perhaps...

General rule of thumb is uniformed officer calls the shots-he is in authority, and can order anything to establish id...worked in a citywide unit(plainclothes) where we werent known by local precints(we would advise we were working in the area) but were told to always stand down when ordered by uniforms-it kind of sucks but is needed to avoid friendly fire accidents-just a lot of machismo going along in the video..uniform guy was in the right and plainclothes guys should have just eaten it(thats what the rules say) have a personel problem-hunt the guy down and challenge him to a smoker(charity boxing match with rules,gloves,headgear...used to happen all the time but todays PC departments dont do it as much)

Political reasons Ron??? Did you ever stop to think they may have had information ( transportation substance, weapons or flight )of requiring them to pull the car over.

I'm amazed no one took a swing with how heated this got!  Scary to see police going at it like that!

Most criminals already look out for any police car or vechicle resembling one so cops are now using automobiles that no one will suspect.  Expect more of that to occur

In any event those two local bumpkins should have know better to fly into a situation half cocked.

^^
NO- both were latino if you read the article, no racism issue... the problem was there were several instances this year of people being pulled over on the highway by dudes wearing bullet proof vests
and simply being robbed.
The uniformed officer was just checking I.D. and not getting any type of co-operation.

If police act like this toward each other, its no surprise they treat civilians the way they do.

With the amount of "bros" and "brahs" used during this 12 minute altercation, they sound like Jersey Shore cast members. IQs of a squash. And these people protect us . :-\ :-\

None of this would have happened if the Bergen county Police would have identified them and acted professional. There were two prior incidents of people getting pulled over by fake police in plain clothes wearing bullet proof vests. They initiated the confrontation and escalated the situation. The cop working plain clothes should always identify them self when a uniformed cop has a question regarding is this guy with a gun a cop?

Regarding the comment about the lack of intelligence is just code for I don't like cops. When the NJ State Police announce they are hiring 100 Troopers they get 20,000 applicants. The applicants contain lawyers and many advanced degrees. In the past you had to have a 4 year degree. The two Bergen county cops base salary is probably 120K and with some overtime I wouldn't doubt it's in the 140K plus range. That Trooper's max base pay is over 110K without over time

Looks like the governor's office (state police) are having some issues w the elected county officials or county in general and are just over exagerrating their toes getting stepped on and using it to start a fight. County already filed a civil rights action against the state.

Something's fishy about this story.  the undercover's were up to no good and got caught.  Their defensivness gives them away.
