What is a good time for a mile?
« on: August 31, 2013, 03:09:20 PM »
Getting into this running thing recently, doing a 'fast' mile (relative ofcourse) on weekdays for a cardio workout and a long run on the weekends (3+  miles). Would like to work up to a respectable time for running a mile. Currently my time is pretty abysmal but I'm only just getting into it. Is sub-7 minutes pretty good?

no, just one mile! 7min mile for 3 miles sounds ridiculous for me at this point!

I guess I also should have clarified running on a track rather than on a treadmill.

Congrats on getting into it. Wish someone would have given me advice to start running 10 years ago. Feel so good

At what age?

Even for someone at my age (22) and only for one mile it is still pretty good, or atleast above average thats for sure

I dont know what your background is, if you have been playing soccer since being 6 y.o. this would be relatively slow, but if its just cardio in addition to building your body in the gym its good.

Cool. Played soccer and wrestled in highschool- no idea what times I was capable of back then, but I know I was pretty damn conditioned during wrestling season!

8 months now. And 5-7 times a week. I am addicted to it. Or rather the results of feeling from it and look from it.

Note: I am not going for the huge 250 pound bb look. Jacked swimmer here

A 7 minute mile works out to just a little over a 3 hour marathon. A lot of people are running that. Depending on your age it's probably good enough in most cases to qualify u for the Boston Marathon, but even then may not be enough.
:o

I suppose the difference is the same as between some one who has been lifting weights for years versus a novice. It seems almost unbelievable the 'feats' possible after years of going at it!

I do a 6 minute mile, but I only run 1 mile and only after a conditioning type workout.

Pretty damn good. I should time a 1 mile just to know. It wouldn't be 6 though thats for sure

Do you guys find it's easier/harder to run on a treadmill versus track?

Treadmill is soooo easy. I did 5 miles outside by a lake this morning and it is much much harder

Yea I was thinking the same. Less resistance on the treadmill, and its easier to pace yourself. But treadmills can be so damn monotonous.

For you big guys watch the running. It is not muscle sparing and can cause overuse injuries. Shorter more intense stuff is better and the fat burn continues well after the session.

If you want to improve your run times, start training your legs unilaterally, one at a time. When you run you don`t jump with both legs, you use one at a time.

For one mile you definitely want to be sub 6 mins. Especially running on a track.

I am going to incorporate this. Definitely want to improve my times

Get the biggest scariest gay guy you can find and tell him if you catch me you can ass rape me then run, do this 3 times per week your cardio will be better in no time.
