I had an interesting convo about this with a Romanian dude I met the other day,he said this was is really about illgeal wepaon sales, Syria is abig buyer of weapons from Russia and the U.S wants a piece of that market, in the last decade many countries have switched from old soviet union and china to U.S for weapons and that market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars (often under the table too), the U.S as seen the opportunity to cut into Syria as well like it did with Egypt and Jordan. It makes sense to me, it wouldn't be the first time.
