That woman is full of shit claiming a "secular" government.  Does she have any idea how Assad got his power?  Also, Syria's constitution requires the president to be a Muslim. Religious courts handle questions of personal and family law. Islamic jurisprudence is a main source of legislation and Syria's judicial system has elements of Ottoman, French, and Islamic laws. The Personal Status Law 59 of 1953 (amended by Law 34 of 1975) is essentially a codified sharia. Article 3(2) of the 1973 constitution declares Islamic jurisprudence a main source of legislation. The Code of Personal Status is applied to Muslims by sharia courts.

Yes it's required the president be muslim.  But sorry, in that area of the world, that's the best secularism gets and it worked good enough until others started budding in...  I agree it's not the purest form of secularism but what they had going on in Syria wasn't all that bad considering all of the factors..... The potential loss for minority religious groups could be a lot worse with a rebel win and you know it.  How else can you explain Christians in Syria being against this and for Assad along with other religious minorities being targeted who are against it?  Explain that?

Under Assad, members of other religions had equal rights under the law, some even served in his government.  So yea, maybe it's not a pure secular gov but for fuck sake, what do you want from a leader who has to govern several factions against each other?
