True, fighters have always come from those classes of civilization that had absolutely nothing left to lose. So yes, combine a total lack of prospects with an innate tendency to be violent and you can get very good fighters.

I was going to post something similar but didnt want it to appear racist.

The reason the blacks are better athletes really has nothing to do with race but socio economic status.
White kids grow up knowing they can be police, doctors, lawyers, engineers, pharmacists, whatever. While black kids unfortunately grow up with few role models and see pro sports as their only ticket to wealth. So as kids they just take sports way more seriously than whites.
