And run peerblock while downloading torrents. Helps keep the anti-piracy groups off your back.

Make sure to keep virus scan up to date. I work on computers 80% of the work is fixing or rebuilding computers from virus damage. A tip don't pay for virus scan your cable provider will usually give it to you free. I am sure virus scan came with the computer but will run out, I have Time Warner Cable I get McAfee free, Mcaffe is not the best but its free. Yes Chrome Browser is the best.

I actually like IE9 (work) and 10 (home), but you do have to switch on Tracking Protection. Just add EasyList and you are good to go.

What I dislike: Firefox. Used to be great, but resource-wise it's shite now and slow as molasses.

One good thing about FF and Chrome: the HideMyAss plugin to proxy yourself. Especially useful if there is a nationwide blockout of a site (like TPB is blocked over here).

Torrents:
Some good ones already mentioned, but I often also check Kickass Torrents (www.kat.ph)

If there's not a program on it, my first concern would be a firewall and an antivirus.

Peer block doesn't do it my friend.  The main problem with torrents is when you use a public torrent site.  The best way for getting torrents and never getting caught...

1) Get hooked up with private site
2) Pay for seed box (maybe cost you $10/mo)
3) Use FTP program to download the stuff from seed box (FTP downloading will not raise a flag with your ISP and you won't get throttled)

Browser : chrome
Spyware : Malwarebytes
'other' cleaner : CCleaner
Video Player : VLC Player

This is an example of how much I do on torrents:

Chrome is good for general browsing, Firefox is also good as it allows a lot of addons, like the ability to download youtube videos.  TOR is good if you want to surf anonymously and hide your tracks.  Get a hold of uTorrent for downloading anything you like, Piratebay is still a good public place to download any software, movies, tv shows,XXX or anything else you like, if you are serious about torrents get an invite to a private site, I can help you with that.  For watching video on your laptop, just download VLC video player, it will play almost anything.  If you need commercial software like MS Office or ADOBE Photoshop, these can also be downloaded from sites like pirate bay using uTorrent.  If torrents seem to much of a learning curve, you can download TV shows from EZTV.

Not asking for invite, but what is your favorite private?  My personal is IPtorrents.  Supposedly the best is something called "The site" or something like that.  VERY VERY exclusive.

IPT for me is best for movies/tv/apps

Kick ass is good for tv shows and programs
Pornbay.org is phenomenal for porn

If you are going to go the route of FTP then CuteFTP is super easy

I only use two private sites, one called PRETOME and the other TVTORRENTS.  I have been a member elsewhere, but I have found PRETOME capable of suiting most of my needs.  I can get games/tv.movies/porn/ebooks all the usual stuff, there are more than enough members to make it easy to fulfil your upload requirements, which are far better than most sites I have found and donations are voluntary, and when you donate you are part of a raffle that has prizes like USB drives etc.  I dl/ul 24/7 and copy everything over to a 12TB server that streams the content all over the house.  There isn't much I haven't got in the way of popular media.  I don't use seedboxes or any peer blocking devices, I have never received a warning and have been doing it for years.  I only occasionally use public torrent sites like piratebay and Kickass.

What is IPtorrents like? What are the seed requirements? Are you interested in trading Invites?

IP is by far the fastest site I have ever seen.  Seeding is like any other...get your ass to 1:1 and you should be cool.  More you seed, the more bonus point you get which you can trade for upload credit or zap a torrent that is being seeded but you know damn well you will never get the 1:1 ratio.  I have been doing this since back in the DC++ days (which kind of pre-dates the napster thing).

Yeah, that's why I like pretome, they have a 60h total seedtime or a 0.75 ratio on each and every torrent.  So you can have a slow as shit upload speed and just seed it for 60hrs and voila! your good to go.  Pretome also offers credits based on how much you download, it doesn't take long before you have enough credits to purchase VIP status which then frees you from any seeding requirements.  You can hit.and run all day long and no penalty. I have been VIP for years and I have more than enough credit to keep his going indefinitely.  I NEVER abuse it though and continue seeding 24/7.  I believe in the community spirit of it !!!  The 60 hr seed limit can see torrents become inactive pretty quickly, so you have to jump on them or use a RSS feed.  But you can always request a reseed and usually someone will reseed for you.

I used to be the same way.  But cheap powerful laptops are a plenty these days, and there is nothing better than doing everything you need to do on a computer while reclining in a big fat expensive leather recliner using a wireless bluetrack mouse that can be used on any surface, in this case the arm of the recliner. Wahooo !!  I am officially a NERD !

I use Chrome for pretty much everything, but switch to firefox to download youtube videos.  I also use Google Drive, gmail, google calendar and have a Google+ account, I am still praying facebook will die and Google+ will take off.

I still don't see the point as I can sit in a nice comfy chair in front of my 3 screens aswell.

+ I get a much larger working space with 3 screens. Feels shitty going back to 1 small screen now.

For me only use for laptops is traveling.
