how  about running Linux?  no need for that stuff
For a minute there I thought you were serious. What's that? you were serious.  Cmon now, I imagine Groink will struggle with Windows 8 let alone the learning curve of a Linux OS.  I know, I know, Linux has improved, it's easy, it's better blah blah blah...

You most definitely need a firewall with Linux. Some distros have their own and it is disabled by default.

Peer block doesn't do it my friend.  The main problem with torrents is when you use a public torrent site.  The best way for getting torrents and never getting caught...

1) Get hooked up with private site
2) Pay for seed box (maybe cost you $10/mo)
3) Use FTP program to download the stuff from seed box (FTP downloading will not raise a flag with your ISP and you won't get throttled)

Browser : chrome
Spyware : Malwarebytes
'other' cleaner : CCleaner
Video Player : VLC Player

This is an example of how much I do on torrents:

I like Microsoft Security Essentials in this cocktail. It will work perfectly with everything listed here.

If you want to step it up, get Microsoft Windows Defender, it's the EXACT same thing but better. Comes already installed in Windows 8. If your computer has Norton or McAfee, just offload those programs and Defender will automatically kick on.

Also: BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD GOOGLE CHROME FROM THE CORRECT SITE!!!!! (I can't stress this enuff, if you get it from the wrong place you can seriously fuck your computer in a matter of moments)

Go too:           https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/

Also if you want a decent movie (no-pay) site, go to Crackle.com

Just have to get used to the advertisements. The selections are pretty good at times.

I prefer Netflix. Cheap, and awesome selections of EVERY genre!

I don't think he was sayin you are stupid, just that linux is too complicated for non-savvy types.  I tried it and promptly said fuck this shit and went back to Bill Gates and said sorry for doubting him.  Windows is really the easiest of all the OS's out there.  And yes I know all about Apple, just not my thing - leave it to the smelly potsmoking hippies to deal with.  me - i like my evil Windows operating system.  does what i need.  Fuck linux don't even waste your time.

I use Chrome for pretty much everything, but switch to firefox to download youtube videos.  I also use Google Drive, gmail, google calendar and have a Google+ account, I am still praying facebook will die and Google+ will take off.

I use DVDVideoSoft youtube downloader....I can send multiple links to the program and they batch download into whatever format I want.

Most torrent sites prefer something like utorrent.  When on a seedbox its ruTorrent

No expert by far, just a personal view:

Hopefully Groink's new LT has the Windows 8.1 installed , with a start button. Win 8 systems have a newer learning curve, takes a little time to get use too. Sometime older programs don't run well (or at all) in Win 8's.
And yes, the 8's have Defender installed , so in theory you need not have another virus program added  (in theory). Just to note, having two, or more, anti virus programs installed will only slow the machine and give many, many false positives flags.

Linux, superior & faster OS, but if any one has only using Windows in the past, there will be needed a different approach to working with it. Linux based OP's are many, and most are free. But running a Win program, on a Linux system, can be a pain in the ass (wine, virtual, crossover, etc). Dual boot ups work well.

If your on the web, you will pickup a virus, malware, edtc...no doubt.  Russian/China/India porn & torrent sites are noted for this.  If government agencies/giant corps, spend millions almost every day developing anti virus, etc, still get them, so will you.  Don't care what OP is run, that personal computer, lap top, tablet, etc is an easy mark for people who know what their doing.. Any anti virus program are no solid guarantee. Same can be said for IP/VPN/Firewall software, which most are usually slow and overrated. Apple people are still in their own dream world about getting a virus/malware....they do and will. Safest OS is probably a Linux/GNU run system.

Been told by people much smarter than me that sites like GB are a piece of cake when it comes to hacking. A couple of them are still in high school.

World War III will be a cyber war, doing much more damage that any bombing raid in all history ever though of doing. The inter structure, power grids, finance/banks,water systems, communications, etc can be destroyed without a shot being fired. China, perhaps, the main worry in the future.

I used to use pirated commercial youtube downloaders, but Youtube kept changing and breaking whatever software I was using. Since it was legitimate software I couldn't update it, then when I discovered the addon app for Firefox (download helper), it worked a treat, will also convert video files, but I just download files in mp4 format, copy to my server and stream to my ps3.  And it costs nothing and updates when required.  I really only download the UFC post fight press conferences, as they pop up on youtube an hour or so after the fight.  I copy it to the server and watch on the ps3, I still prefer to watch any lengthy media on the TV.

Newsgroups>torrents any day of the week.  No waiting for seeds, max out your connection downloading, sign up with an indexing site and download to your hearts content.  SSL connection and there aren't any ISP's that throttle newsgroup traffic that I'm aware of and I've checked all the majors, Comcast, TWC, Verizon etc.

One of my more tech-savvy mates told me that newsgroups are better too but I've no idea how to use them (or even find the right ones for that matter). I've been using torrents for several years now.

Any good links and/or instructions?

I do it slightly different.  My hard drive it partitioned so one small part is programs/windows.  The other part is everything else.  Pictures, music, documents, etc.  I have an image of a fresh install ready so if I ever want to just wipe my main partition clean....thats what I do.  Then I look back at my software I know I have been using and reinstall any I need.

You'll need a newsgroup provider, find one here:

http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/

Just watch this video to set everything up, you'll also need an indexing site for the programs to search from, there are several free ones available, just google it:

Check the subredit usenet forum as well, lots of info there to get you going.  It's not difficult, once everything is set up and installed you just enter what TV shows you want to watch into Sickbeard and it goes out and grabs them for you and any  time a new episode is released it downloads it automatically.  Same with Couchpotato but it's for movies.

Yea NG's are great for everything, especially if you are looking for a safe and cheap alternative to replacing cable completely.
