Jon Lester shut down the Cardinals in Game 1 of the World Series in Boston Wednesday night. The Red Sox lefty scattered five hits over 7 2/3 inniings without allowing a run while striking out eight.

Naturally, a Cardinals minor league pitcher, Tyler Melling, posted a picture of Lester’s glove on Twitter and everyone is now in a tizzy wondering if Lester was using a foreign substance to doctor the ball.

From screenshots, it’s hard to even guess what the blotch on Lester’s glove might be. It would take some serious cojones to try to use Vaseline on a ball during the World Series. There are six umpires on the field, thousands of people in the stadium, millions watching at home and yet nobody noticed except one person on Twitter?

Amateur conspiracy theorists can point to this video evidence that, yes, Lester was clearly doctoring the baseball.

I do think Clay Buchholtz wetting his hair between every inning is suspect. Who's to say he doesn't use soul glow on his hair and wetting it re-activates the oil...But not enough oil as to it's visible on the ball...Pedro Martinez for sure used some sort of product in his hair...You could literally see oil dripping off Pedro's hair some nights...

And I'm guessing you haven't read any player complaints specific to this at Fenway.

I'm loving the boston reporters analysis... "This is probably just some plastic used to keep the glove together at the webbing..."

hahahaha modded gloves, for the pitcher, and he keeps touching that part before pitching.  And I bet the glove is "missing" today when MLB asks for it.

Almost every pitcher will use some sort of substance in cold weather, rain etc. Usually pine tar. But it's a fine line of how much is allowed...I don't know what Lester has in his glove but my guess is it is not what people think it is. The STL minor leaguer who tweeted about the glove erased his tweets most likely because STL management probably told him "WTF are you doing"...We don't want the whole world looking at our pitchers now you dumbbass...

I'm not a fan of Lester because I think he shows up the Umps almost every time he doesn't get a call and I believe it works against him and his team...Because he had cancer people have walked on egg shells with him. But the guy has shown he is a total cry baby on the mound. I also wonder if he gets a pass on PED's because of his cancer...

I'm guessing the pic is either two things - the light/angle made it look worse than it was, or he messed up and later massaged it into the glove.  You don't need a bunch of goop - just a bit on the surface, which would be hard to see, given all the dirt, sweat, etc.
