Bob Backlund

Curious as to what the draw was with Bob Backlund? I caught him at the tail end but fail to see the draw except for his true baby face/ howdy doodie charm

that was it, real baby face. wrestling used to be the obvious babyface vs the obvious heel.

and he was a wrestler, wrestling used to be about wrestling moves and holds.

I recall a bit during his title run where he did step-ups on to a chair for the entire hour while matches were going on.

I believe it was in tandem with his run for office, can't recall exactly what spot if it was mayor or senator

Another part of Backlund's appeal was that even though he was "clean" and "fair" he could lay a smackdown on someone when he got riled up enough.

The "Mr. Backland"/sociopath character was too cheesy.

From the few Backlund matches I seen he always gave me the same type of positive "gung ho" "thumbs" up vibe that Jim Duggan and that Eugene character had.
