I have once.  I sat in front of a stinky Middle Eastern family on an eight hour flight.  I closed my eyes and deeply inhaled as much of the pungent diversity as I could.  Afterwards I felt like I was a more tolerant understanding person.  Nothing is as potent an antidote to white privilege as smelly foreigners.

haha... This isn't a joke, lots of Liberals really are like that.  ;D

That was a test to see if anybody will do anything. The people on the plane failed and because of that, there will be more death.

The right answer is that the MEN on the flight should have been falling over each other to get to him first and deliver that crucial first elbow to his neck.

If I had been sitting there that c.unt would have got half way thru his first Allah before my size 11 doc martin boot hit him in the balls so hard he would have been chanting 2 octaves higher.

My second boot would then go so far up his arse that when he got carried off the flight on a stretcher, onlookers would think that doc martin had started producing Muslim hats.

Insightful sentiments, eloquent prose. Magnificent.

This is how we know we've figured shit out since 9/11. Mini Me gets ass-raped by TSA, which is understandable, considering our tragic history with celebrity dwarf terrorism; and Mo, who fits no rational man's profile of anything remotely nefarious, freely screams "Allah Akbar!" (again, harmless phrase, totally unassociated with anything negative historically) at 35,000 feet completely unmolested.

This is how we know we're safe.

Comments like these show how people just have no common sense at all. Think about it, he's in some crazy motorized wheelchair. Which means he didn't go threw any off the screening equipment. Therefore he and his chair had to get inspected.

Now are you that clueless to think a government agency can pick and choose who should go through security? Your ok because your a dwarf even though your alarmed, but not you because your Arab even though the machine says your clear? That'll go over well.

I think you misunderstand. We got this shit licked was my point.

But the "common sense" part was a nice touch.

Permitted concealed weapons. Shoot him in the forehead. Move to first class, order a cocktail, click on movie and enjoy the rest of the flight after you dump over the side from 350000 ft.

350,000 feet? Seriously? That's a third of the way to the ISS and about 50km higher than the edge of the stratosphere. Also, what kind of fuel do you use for your space-pickup there cowboy?

Frankly, I wouldn't give a shit whether people slept, read, drank, ate, played or prayed on board, as long as they didn't bother everyone else.

Hell, I wouldn't give a single thought about who I'm flying next to, provided that we had decent and sensible airport security employing serious people.

But we don't. Instead, we have a bunch of uneducated, morbidly obese losers with the IQ of a pet rock trying their hand at kabuki theater and calling it security. And that's why we read about the TSA harassing Medal of Honor recipients, abusing amputee veterans and diplomats.

That's why we read about them harassing incontinent old ladies, breast feeding mothers, cancer patients and, of course, the most likely people to be terrorists: 7-year old girls with cerebral palsy and 3-year olds in wheelchairs.

That's why we have them questioning people carrying cash, checks and confiscating dangerous items like prescribed medication and car keys.

That's why they consider pilots a security risk subjecting them to "intense" screenings.

And we let them - we let them grope us, shout at us, abuse us, intimidate us, and force us into submission, until the vast majority of us just learn the most important lesson of all: just do as you're told by the person with the badge.

Embarrassing. Any Muslim will tell you that. The Prophet has a saying: "My back has been broken by 'pious' men". This idiot is an example of such a pious man, and lord knows the world has too many of 'em.

I don't think you get it, guy. Non-discriminatory security checks SAVE LIVES.

You come off like some culturally insensitive xenophobe with your suggestion that PROFILING, God forbid, might be a reasonable necessity for air-travel safety.

Who are you to say a wheelchaired 3 year-old is off limits? Are you a mind reader? Perhaps she has deep-seated ideological, theological, and/or political beefs with her government, and she's willing to take it all the way. Do you KNOW?

But you're cool just rolling her C4-rigged bombchair right past Shaneekwa's wand simply because she's a crippled fetus. Or is it because she's not holding a Koran? Just say it.

No, you don't think, and you shouldn't try to think that much all in one go anyways or you'll strain yourself. You got to take it easy at first. Warm up a bit, start with a bit of mild mental callisthenics first, then work your way up to more thinking as you get more fit.

Now that that's out of the way: I don't disagree that non-discriminatory security makes sense. The argument I'm making is that the approach we currently have against security is wrong. Not because it doesn't discriminate, but because it's not risk-based. A risk-based approach to security is based on sound principles and is backed up by research and real-world experience and is, in fact, the approach advocated by numerous security experts.

You come off like some culturally insensitive xenophobe with your suggestion that PROFILING, God forbid, might be a reasonable necessity for air-travel safety.

Culturally insensitive xenophobe? I never argued that profiling is a reasonable necessity for anything, although I think that in adopting a risk-based approach, factors that screeners cannot currently employ could be used.

Who are you to say a wheelchaired 3 year-old is off limits?

I didn't say they're off-limits. I complained about the way they were treated, and about the fact that despite having few - if any - risk identifiers, had an overwhelming amount of attention placed on her, which would have been better spent by examining more people, more carefully.

Also - and this may be too subtle a point for someone with the IQ of tepid bathwater to understand - please note that there's a difference between performing a careful and thorough search of someone and abusing someone.

Tell us:
  • Do you really think that it is appropriate for screeners to squeeze urostomy bags until they burst and is it good security to do so?
  • Do you really think that it is good security to prevent carrying the Medal of Honor on a plane because it's shaped like a "throwing-star" and could be used as a weapon?
  • Do you really think that it is necessary to force patients who are bringing along medication for which they have a prescription from choosing between flying and going into a diabetic coma?
Are you a mind reader?

If I were, I wouldn't ask you the above questions, would I?

Perhaps she has deep-seated ideological, theological, and/or political beefs with her government, and she's willing to take it all the way. Do you KNOW?

Who? The three-year old? I very much doubt a three year old girl has any deep-seated ideological, theological and/or political beliefs about anything, except perhaps, her favorite blankey.

As for her parents? Sure, maybe they do, and maybe they're willing to use their daughter as means to an end. Which is why you want a risk-based approach.

But you're cool just rolling her C4-rigged bombchair right past Shaneekwa's wand simply because she's a crippled fetus.

Your attempt to construct a straw-man argument that approximates what you perceive my position to be is laughable at best.

Or is it because she's not holding a Koran? Just say it.

It's actually because like most young girls, she is statistically likely to listen to Justin Bieber. You exposed me.

Ok, sarcasm is out. Sorry, dude. Assumed formal education was just part of your repertoire; I see now that it's not. It's obviously everything. Please disregard my post altogether. Wasn't composed for those of your pedigree.

But point by point, man. Fuck me, you rebutted that shit. Is sarcasm cultural? What the fuck am I missing? This is one of the smart ones, no?

I do tend to write long replies and to address specific points; it's not everyone's cup of tea, especially in the age of Twitter and acronym-laden responses. But I think that it is important to address things carefully and individually, especially when "talking" over text on a forum such as this.

Unfortunately, I did miss the sarcasm in your post; in hindsight it's quite evident. I do apologize and hope that you will forgive me. In my defense, after having dealt with people like Soul Crusher, The Coach and 24KT, I've become disillusioned about humanity and no longer find it difficult to believe that someone that stupid can exist.

Anyways, my original reply tried to convey this point:

I believe that good security looks at the risks and involves making intelligent decisions about where to deploy assets and against whom. It is clear to me that TSA's approach fails in that respect and consists mostly of security theater. Unfortunately, ordinary people are caught up in that theater far too often.

I believe that we should not (a) tolerate security theater in place of well-designed and properly implemented security practices; and (b) allow the abusive practices of the TSA to continue in the name of security.
