But hasn't the American government also backed Islamic Jihadists? Didn't they aid the radicals (soon to be Taliban) in Afghanistan to defeat the Soviets? Didn't they aid radicals more recently in Libya and Syria to overthrow Gaddafi and Assad? Looks like the US and Saddam had a lot in common then – helping extremists whenever it helped them to serve a purpose.
Saddam also had many radicals killed since he saw them as a threat to his own power. The likes of ISIS would never have any success in Iraq if Saddam was still there, that's for sure.

Your missing the entire point, that we are at war with an immoral ideology, one that doesn't play by the rules.  So to combat such people you yourself need to bend the rules also.  To suggest that the West is just as immoral as these sick twisted fanatical Islamic groups is just plain wrong.  It was like what the West did to get rid of people like Pablo Escobar, when the West played by the rules he become stronger and more of a threat to the entire country, it wasn't until a vigilante group who was just as Ruthless as Escobar came onto the scene (Los Pepes) that he was eventually weakened and eventually killed.  Like Escobar, why would anybody cry for tyrants like Gaddafi and Assad.

It is an unfortunate fact when dealing with highly immoral individuals or groups that the more moral of the two will have to at times sink to their levels.  This is why the Islamists remain so enduring, they have no moral boundaries and will sink to the most depraved depths of inhumanity. And regardless of whether or not ISIS would have never formed under Saddam makes no difference, they are both equally depraved entities that caused untold suffering to their own people.

The West has been under attack from within since the start of the 20th century - probably longer.
