The issue of online trolling is never too far away from public debate, but the UK government is gearing up to tackle the problem head-on by quadrupling the maximum sentence for those convicted of online abuse.

The news comes hot on the heels of the well-publicized threats aimed at Judy Finnegan and her daughter on Twitter, after the TV presenter voiced a degree of support for a footballer who was set to be released from prison after serving two years for rape.

Now, as the Mail on Sunday reports, internet trolls who partake in vile abuse could receive anything up to two years behind bars as part of a renewed attempt to curb trolling.

“These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life,” said Justice Secretary Chris Grayling. “No one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media. That is why we are determined to quadruple the current six-month sentence.”

An amendment to facilitate this new law will be made to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill that is already going through Parliament.

Whats even worse, many adolescents who were charged as sex crimes at a young age, go to court to get their records erased and judges still make them register as sexual offenders. At times, a child, say 6 years old, may do something sexually to another child, obviously not knowing the repercussions. These same children are then required to register as sexual offenders when they reach 18. Lives ruined forever based on something you did when you were 6.

I made a thread a while back about the media's obsession with trolling ( it is an excuse to trawl up celebrities or controversial issues and draw on fake moral outrage). It makes a good story on a slow newsweek, gets lota of text and social media reaction and is click bait for their websites and internet illiterate parents. You know - is my child going to kill themselves because of trolls (bullying and mental illness in reality).

This is the political grandstanding that results from following populist media. Sad thing is there is little informed or objective debate because the politician or party that raise issue will reply " so you like people dying?" Or "you support bullying?"  To elicit  a good soundbyte.

Politics has always been influenced by hysteria and moral outrage. Prohibition got through because of the tactics of the tempreance movement where it got to the point that noone wanted to be seen to oppose them as it equated to supporting immorality and a breakdown in moral values.

This shit wouldn't happen if normal people like is didn't just roll our eyes and started a movement or petitiona but we sit back and tut tut knowing it is retarded and politicians see they can appease the stupid moaners and we just sit back saying fuck it.

land of the free? i was in a quick check back in 2005 and a fat lady cashier told me i had to take my dvd player off when i was in the store,i ignored her and she said it again screaming at me.i told her to fuck off and left,i get pulled over 2 blocks away and was written a ticket to APPEAR in court for verbal abuse this does not sound like land of the free to me,also when cops can pull u over with no probable cause and search the shit out of your car and u got to wait 30 minutes,then tell u u can go when they find nothing,no apology or nothing
