Along with team sports, I never understood the need for an expensive, flashy car. As long as the car gets you from point A to point B and you don't die, who cares if it cost 15,000 or 80,000. Most people who buy these type of cars do so for one reason: to show off to others. I can't envision no other reason to buy an expensive car. Save the, "Well, I am a car guy."  :-\ :-\ You're only a car guy because society has placed a value on cars, thus you became a car guy to show off to others. When society places a value on anything, people jump on the bandwagon to get it.

It's actually because I get pure enjoyment out of looking at shit like this with my life...

As opposed to this...

you have a point but you miss the main one, pleasure/enjoyment. If we live life with no pleasure what is the purpose? Many people find a pleasure/enjoyment in driving expensive fast cars.
Do you think Arnold (or anyone of that caliber) is driving expensive cars to show off?

I guess to each their own. It's baffling how someone can get enjoyment out of a car. Then again, some people get pure enjoyment from science or art.

Dreaming about buying a car and how cool it would be to have it is a lot cheaper than actually buying it. That's what I have been doing for years. Think about it. It's all in the mind.

Buying an expensive car to drive to work is just hilariously absurd. Do you not realize this? Stop and think about this for a moment and it may sink in...

Arnold is different. Arnold can drive a beat the shit out of car, and still be Arnold. In the same way that Bill Gates drove to meetings in his Ford Taurus. These guys buy expensive cars because they actually like them when they do buy them. They don't buy them to show off because no matter what they drive they are still of a specific caliber. And people know this.

However, I think a lot of people who are not of their caliber (arnold or bill gates) buys expensive car to try and keep up with the Jones's. Its our way to try and stand out from the crowd, to be better and more richer than the next guy. Arnold and Bill Gates don't need to buy an expensive car to do this because they are who they are and everyone knows them. More menial people try to reach this level by splurging on things, not because they truly enjoy them, because of the way it appears to others. TEMPER wrote in a previous post that people judge in the real world. He stated, "I'm just saying...In the real world people judge you,"  Clearly he is worried about people judging him by the car he drives.

Oh it's absolutely a status symbol. You are 100% correct on that.

But that's only when it's a new off the lot lease for $100k...When it's 5 years old and costs $20k it's just my way of enjoying a slice of a $100k lease on my budget.

Could I technically afford to spend $600 a month on some 2015 Jag...Yes. Would I rather spend $250 a month on the 5 year old version. Yes.

BUT the $600 a month vehicle has a 100% coverage warranty, the $250 does not, so the minute something happens that costs $3k...You're up to $600 a month ANYWAY in the older cheaper car. So it's all about hoping a praying nothing serious falls off the POS...

There are gives and takes.

When your budget is $10 a $20k car seems fancy and overpriced, but when you make $4k a month a $250 a month vehicle is just meh...So why not go AS high class as you can for that $250 a month? See my reasoning?

Doesn't have to be Arnold's caliber.
I guy I know bought Ferrari Italia last year and he is not super ritch or anything like it. He has quite successful business, a couple mill worth home, and another car, Range Rover Sport.
You only need to see him in this car, he looks like a kid in candy shop. It is all pleasure for him, not a show off at all. I remember him saying he always wanted to drive Ferrari and finally he can afford one so he bought it. A pure meaning of word pleasure. Of course there is plenty of people buying it for show off but we cannot put all in the same boat.

lol dude you bought a car that was $70-150k brand new in 2002 10 years later for $20k     (that isn't even a Turbo) you sir drive a depreciated POS...Albeit a beautiful one, Porsche is my all time dream car, but not a 2002 with no turbo, which is what I can afford lol.

But it would seem that we're in the same boat...If shit hits the fan with that Porsche you're out $1k minimum...Same with the Jag. With proper maintenance it will last forever and hold SOME value..

Not even close man. Not even close.

$600 a month payment is roughly a $30k car loan with 60 month term.

Your math is way off.

ahahahahahha!

I'll explain this the best I can. Everyone WANTS a nice expensive luxury foreign car. Myself included.

....UNTIL shit starts breaking and you realize that sweet car you bought for next to nothing compared to the original MSRP, then you have to fork over few grand 1,2, 3 times a year ...then that want for said vehicle will wear off.

If you need to borrow money for a 20k car like that, you could easily come unstuck.

You'd easily be looking at 10k for a new gearbox plus an extended time waiting for delivery of the parts where you'd need to be hiring.

Hell, just a set of tires is probably gonna run you $500-$1000.

New windscreen $1000 minimum...

Plus these cars arent common enough where refurb parts are easy to come by.

In the long run, it just aint worth the street cred.

i bought an asian car with 5,750miles on it only so good as new and less than a year old for $ 9000

been driving it for two years it got about 45,000 miles now, so far no problems at all, had to change front tires because they wore out which was really cheap as well. maintenance checkups i did 2 so far, it was real cheap too and no issues

hope this piece of crap will last a few more years

Your math is way off.

$50k vehicle

$10k down / $2k trade in

72 months

2% interest

6% sales tax

$605 a month

The 2015 Jag part was the off part, it would be a 2014 Jag XF for 50k.

I'm just saying...In the real world people judge you,

And what does it matter if people judge you? At least care about being judged on the important things. Not a car. You care that much about being judged by the car you drive?  :-\ :-\

I kind of agree with you, but I must admit it would be nice to have a sports car like a Porche of Ferrari for the one and only reason that it is some fucking cool cars! I never gave a flying fuck what others think, so I know I would`nt buy one for "their pleasure". ::)

First and foremost, when Im done studying and my economi is finally booming again, I will get a car thats all about class, like a BMW or Audi. You gotta have a car that fits your persona imo. 8)
