Actually you can. Rorian Gracie did it with the Gracie name. He owns the trademark for which it is used. Not the name but the use. Not sure how it is now but back when he first started doing this, his family members had to pay him $5,000 a year for 5 years then after 5 years they could use it for nothing. Caused allot fo shit to happen within the family. Not exactly sure on the numbers butI know I am close. It is for usage of the name in a specific classification.

I still don't get how that can work legally... if you have two members of a family involved in the same sport or acivity... messed up.

the Gracies are a complex history...I live in Brasil, so i met already some of them here...But the family its gigantic, and everyone wants to use the name since it means $$...
I myself only respect Helio Gracie and his sons (Rickson, Royler, Royce)...There are some really good fighters in the other 'sides' of the family, but all of them are known as really low individuals...(im talking about the ones who live in brasil or are always here)
But about the Ferrigno thing, Jesus, the guy is really a asshole...Ahnold should punch him and make him a little bitch, the same way he did when the 2 competed against each other

The rest of the Gracie family does not agree with Rorion's approach, and Rorion has become the headache of the Gracie family. I was the one who intervened by filing a lawsuit challenging Rorion's false advertising and his attempt to appropriate the "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" name. This matter has been in the courts for over two years already and we will be going to trial in November. The Gracie family always had a tradition of never fighting each other in public, and I think it is a rather sad change to see this family of great fighters paying lawyers instead of solving this ourselves.
