During the 19th century, men and women both wore pinky rings on their left hands to indicate they were not interested in marriage. In the 1950s and 1960s, gay men and women wore pinky rings to identify themselves to others in the gay community. Pinky rings have long been associated with criminal activity. Members of the Mafia who had killed people traditionally wore them, as did grifters.

used to be fairly wide spread in the UK, most wearing a signet ring on the ring finger. Wearing it on the small finger is very old school and most have a solid gold signet with initials engraved( what i wear on my left hand small finger). You can of course have a semi precious stone with your initials engraved too. The standard Gold in the UK is 9 or 18 KT. In Germany it used to be 8 and 14 KT which were common. I like the US 10kt and the College type rings some wear.
