The effects of this is that marginally profitable businesses will go belly up resulting in a loss of jobs. The businesses that don't go out of business will look to maintain profitability by either reducing staff, replacing staff with machines or both.

The biggest loser will be those at the bottom of the economic who need that first job in order to gain experience, those poor underprivileged yutes that liberals supposedly care so much about.

Usually those who advocate for a way above market level minimum wage have never run so much as a hot dog stand and should not be taken seriously.

The biggest losers will be low level managers.  if the $7 burger flipper gets $15 and hour then so will the manager that was getting $20.  They'll need to recoup that money from somewhere.  Raising min wage to $15 will flatten salaries up to about $25-30 an hour as companies will expect more from less from the higher earners while getting less for more from the bottom earners.

The Federal minimum wage is $7.25. Many States have that same minimum wage and many have a higher minimum wage. Cities can also set a minimum wage. The higher of any of these is the legally required minimum wage in that jurisdiction. In other words Cities and States can set a minimum wage that is higher then the Federal rate. Cities and/or States cannot set a minimum wage which is lower than the Federal rate.

The Oregon Legislature recently passed a highly contested and complicated minimum wage. The six-year plan would raise wages starting this July, to $9.75 in urban areas and $9.50 in a lower, rural tier. Increases would top out in 2022 at $14.75 inside Portland's urban growth boundary, $13.25 in midsize counties and $12.50 in so-called "frontier" areas.

Bernie Sanders, Presidential candidate has proposed a $15.00 minimum wage. Should Congress pass a $15.00 minimum wage, it will become the legally required rate in all states. General consensus is that this won't happen. If the elected President endeavored to set the National minimum wage by executive order, all hell would break loose. Don't look for this to happen.

It's all about supply and demand. When employers cannot hire or retain qualified employees because salaries are too low, they will raise the wage. When there are more people seeking employment than there are jobs, wages, hours and benefits will fall. Of course, they cannot in most cases fall below the Federal minimum wage.

CNN posted a graph comparing min. wage to inflation and since the 30's they've stayed even to where the last decade the min wage falls below inflation.  Not sure why they're all settled on $15.  Is 16 too much and 14 not enough?

And some reasons inflation is outpacing the minimum wage now - real growth and the USA GDP are falling due to debt, and we are outsourcing our production capabilities. Minimum wage would be $3 per hour if all people on govt assistance were in the workforce. It would be like China. There would be nothing for that many entry level workers to do. The efficiency of computing and robot technology has made the factory worker and buildings full of paper pushers obsolete.

You cannot legislate value into an economy, only divide the current pie into pieces. For those that have not figured it out yet, the plan is for the "haves" to have vastly more than the "have nots". There will be no middle class. This is why Bernie speaks with conviction. He knows the end game and has since the 60s when these policies started.

$15 min wage will move poor people who are use to living like scumbags into areas that are better kept. And then those areas will become flooded with rift raft which will drive up rent in nicer areas to keep the min wagers out...Right now the World Banks say the poor are under banked or are not using the banking system at all. $15 will move a lot of these people into the World Banking system which will increase the amount of debt for each person...Sanders is the guy who wants a bank at every post office.

2,

Not hard to see why the campaign slogan, "Free Everything!" would resonate with that crowd.

The unemployment numbers are a scam. They are not counting the people who go off unemployment as unemployed. They are counting all the part time jobs companies offer to avoid paying health care. How many people do you know that have two part time jobs.

If you want to pay people almost 30K a year to work at Burger King and stocking shelves in Walmart be prepared for high price goods. Imagine a husband and wife at McDonalds making 60K?  Now it's common for someone fresh out of college to make 30K.  It just doesn't seem right. Now entry level high school kids and those working while in college won't be able to find any job because they will be very limited if the 30K becomes  the law.

What I can say is that is that FDR's new deal did usher in what many consider to be the most prosperous economic boom ever. Lasted all the way to the mid 70s.

Much of which is attributable to the "socialist" policies that he presented.

War spending drove the economy all that time. WW2 took the US out of depression, followed by the Cold War? Korean War and Vietnam War. We are still paying on the Vietnam war bonds.

Not only that, but, the rest of the industrial world had been bombed out, and China and India weren't part of the economy. Under those conditions, you can get away with some Socialist inefficiency. However, if anyone believes that those policies actually created prosperity is drinking the Liberal Kool Aid.

Here's how Socialist policies really work:

So you're saying we should be in a perpetual state of war for economic prosperity?

WW2 did certainly, but those policies of the new deal never left and are why many people who are alive today found success. The baby boomers who are saying never give anyone free things don't mind their socialist policies when it fits them.

Which new "New Deal?" There were two, right? The second was more radical and invasive than the first because the first one was a massive failure, second one was too seeing as the outcome was another brutal recession and stock market crash. WWII brought the U.S. out of depression and killed the major players thus leaving a giant vacuum with little in the way of global economic competition. Germany wasn't "rebuilt" until the mid-80's.

If anything the "New Deal(s)" made the depression worse. A giant and conintual mis-allocation of capital, completely dislocated the economy from private, sustainable investment. The fact that these legacy programs still walk the nation like zombies is a testament to the New Deals utter failure.

Yet I ask you.

Are not these "successful people" such as Trump and a host of others who are in the damn near 70 range not recipients of the new deal? I haven't gotten anything from it, but they have.

Yes, if we viewing it from a Keynesian perspective, then minimum wage and wages will generally be just below inflation, always trying to catch up and maybe getting there for a short while, but the businesses will increase prices which will be soon be transferred back into inflation and the cycle carries on.

Basically the answer lies in either getting rid of all unions, or making all workers, in every field part of a union. Either all or none.....that's the only way to get rid of the large disparity in wages and create a balance.

There is a high minimum wage in Australia and it just kills manufacturing.

Also kills entry level work. Nothing wrong with getting $8 an hour and working your way up or to better paying jobs in a different company. That is what should breed better workers and skills.

A while back the government here made it compulsory to give a worker a minimum 3 hour shift. It fucked with kids working 2 hours in a store after school to make some extra money. Governments are run by fucking morons who have never been in the real world. They have studied the way to do things in books, kiss arse to get pushed for a council seat and work their way up from there. They have no idea about human behaviour and what people will do, as well as generally just making decisions based upon who pays them the most money. That's what really changes decisions, that and what gets them more votes.

Min wage should be $20 per hour and that way people would be able to buy more stuff and stimulate the economy.  :D
