Wendy’s fast food restaurant chain says it will begin offering self-serve kiosks at its 6,000-plus locations across America, making them available to costumers by the end of 2016.

The fast food giant’s decision to move toward automation comes just as “Fight for $15”–a progressive protest movement, pushing minimum wage hikes–is applying pressure on state governments to raise wages for low-skilled fast food workers.

Last August, Wendy’s CFO Todd Penegor told investors that mandated wage hikes will cause his company to pursue other innovative avenues that could lead to fewer jobs for low-skill workers.

“We continue to look at initiatives and how we work to offset any impacts of future wage inflation through technology initiatives, whether that’s customer self-order kiosks, whether that’s automating more in the back of the house in the restaurant,” Penegor said, adding that “you’ll see a lot more coming on that front later this year from us.”

On the same conference call, Wendy’s CEO Emil Brolick said that individual Wendy’s franchises “will likely look at the opportunity to reduce overall staff, look at the opportunity to certainly reduce hours and any other cost reduction opportunities, not just price.”

Indeed, Wendy’s officials told Investor’s Business Daily that it would be up to individual franchisees to decide whether they will offer the self-serve kiosks.

Penegor says several franchises are being squeezed by wage inflation. California’s 250-plus franchise-owned Wendy’s are struggling with the state’s $10 minimum wage, which will soon spike to $15. Franchise-operated Wendy’s restaurants in New York–where minimum wage is $15–can’t compensate for that state’s crushing wage increase.

“You know there are some people out there who naively say that these wages can simply be passed along in terms of price increases,” Brolick said last August. “I don’t think that the average franchisee believes that.”

I think it was going to happen anyway. Wendys is just using this as an excuse to blame it on the wage increase. Eventually, these machines would replace even the minimum wage workers.

Supposedly the ultimate goal for some of these owners is a completely automated store where the machines take the money and make the meals with one attendant on site to overlook it all.

Many jobs that require customer service may make their way to machines. A world run by machines!

Why only costumers? I'm not dressing up just to eat at a Wendy's.

Agreed. The minimum wage increase may have sped this process up, but it was bound to happen sooner or later. It was just a matter of time.

The author made a spelling error in the article and SquatsRule here came back with a clever little retort.

BAD IDEA!

Ever stood behind some 87 IQ moron and his woman trying to get 3 redbox movies?   Shit, you're there for 12 minutes as they are baffled by options then bewildered by the checkout process.

Same thing will happen here.  Idiot customers will be the bottleneck here.

Wendy's is one of the best.  The beef is flat griddled and never frozen and is always cooked to order.

I recommend getting the triple cheeseburger, the largest burger they have.  Actually that is my recommendation for all fast food or hamburger places.  Order the biggest burger you can get with the most meat to bun ratio.  Wendy's has a good triple.

Yeah, the thing about all of them, they are all different and do things different from one another.  Saying one is better than another is difficult and pointless because its not about that really.  Each may provide or hit something that another does not.  All are good in their own respects and just going to one place is missing out.  The real trick is figuring out what each does best or why you like what each one does over the other and going there to meet that want.

The same is true with all restaurants/foods.  People who thumb their nose immediately, are morons.

As far as automated kiosks go, they are no big deal at all.  Its just a touch screen where you place orders.

Ordering online is the same difference and is something I will do often, even at fast food.  Order online and you just go get it instantly.  Also, they will make it better usually as they are not under time constraint or countdown so they will put a little more effort into it.

mcdonalds in Australia has had these for ages. You can still line up if you want and order to a person but the kiosks is way easier especially since they have the build your own burger option there too.

Surely this will all be done via a phone app before too long though won't it?

walmart has these self-checkouts now.  It's the same way.   There's like 3 steps... scan, put in basket, pay.   These folks spend 6 minutes buying 2 candy bars.  Annoying.

self-serve isn't always a good idea when it requires decision making, or multiple steps.  If you think the McD employees suck at their job, imagine the average inbred Trump voter from the street, trying to place a complex order at that same register.

Fresh & Easy Grocery store had it around here, they all went out of business , people kept stealing shit all the time, they had one person looking after 7 registers, people would override the coupons and shit like that, same thing would happen with dumb fucks and 2 items , selecting payment , entering their store cards, it was a hassle shopping there
