The first four are amongst the greatest heavy metal albums ever recorded. The self-titled is still heavy as hell, but moderated and paced in such a way that the masses could grasp its songcraft. It propelled the band into stardom and success never before seen with a metal act. Especially one from the more extreme end of the style (here, thrash).

Since then, Metallica has sucked and become irrelevant to the contemporary metal scene.

This attempt to recapture that "thing" is too little too late. It's been a quarter of a century.

The riffs are rote, Lars hasn't kept pace with drmming advancements (or even himself) and Kirk is the most underwhelming soloist of his peers from the original Cali thrash community. His bag of tricks is old. In short, he stinks.

Metal has moved on. And of the oldschool, most have never failed their audience in the way that Metallica has.

They squandered their career timeline with decades of bullshit and inferior material.

Too little. And too late.

I approve of most of this, but still think All Nightmare Long on Death Magnetic is epic, and will give this album a fair shot.

In the end I like most music and could give 2 fucks when people nitpick the shit out of it.

don't like, dont listen to it.

kinda like bieber, I am not a fan, but I am not going to deny some fan of his the happiness his music brings to them for whatever reason by whining and and trying to pinpoint the exact moment an artist decided that his hardcore fans alone were not going to provide them with enough income to live outside of bedbug infested motels and rooming house existences just to stay pure for a bunch of faggy music snobs who were never good enough themselves to play, produce, or sing for shit

that's all I am saying

Solid effort for the mid 80s but metal has moved on from this sound and if I'm honest as a die hard metal fan this is not innovative in the least bit and doesn't do much for me. In addition, his voice.. I cannot stand Hetfield's voice at any point past justice. It's just too pop.

I've done a lot of listening this year to metal in particular. I've heard it all genrewise in my time as a metal fan. I'm loving Adept's new album Sleepless, and the new Architects record as well.

best stuff theyve done in ages. this and the first single.

this is old school metallica. straight up

Been a Metallica fan since 1988 (when I was 10). Since James went sober in 2001 he completely lost his set of balls. He has 0 REAL aggression left in him. He tries to "sing" and ends up sounding like he's auditioning for Americas Got Talent. While both Kirk and Lars lost their playing skills around 15 years ago, James imo has been the weak link of the band. He's way too happy and rich to sing the songs the way they were meant to be sung, with venom and real anger. They are a polished hard rock billion dollar corporation who have 0 musical integrity in their veins and completely sold out for the almighty dollar. The sheep will buy whatever they sell and they know it, hence why it takes them 8-9 years to release an album. They have been on autopilot since 2001 (when Jason left the sinking ship). Metallica died in 1993/1994 and were passable until 2000. It's just FAKE and FORCED music today and real METAL fans know that. It's mainstream watered down safe by the numbers generic pop/country/hard rock masqueraded for metal. They should have been stripped of the METAL in METALlica as soon as Load was released in 1996 (20 fucking years ago). Some even think when The Black Album was released 25 years ago. They DID sell out even way back then, but at least they were still a badass live band on that tour and they all still gave it 110% back then. Fuck that and fuck them and this is from a former die hard fan who has seen them live a dozen times.

Yup, it sounds like it's a leftover from Death Magnetic (Beyond Magnetic EP). It's forced metal/aggression, but the masses will eat it up as they do with  everything else Metallica tries to push.

Bought RTL as a new release. Was as big a Metallica fan in the '80s as they came. The self-titled, while a heavy heavy metal album, failed to my ears. Great "songs" and great production, but it and me didn't connect. I bought Load, listened through once, and I broke it in half and chucked it into the garbage can.

I agree with the poster a couple up. James now has zero metal fire in his being.

The fellas are playing a role. It's no longer real. It is forced. The new music is metal by guys who lost their metal hearts a long time ago.

My CD collection is nearing five thousand. I buy between five and 15 discs each week. Essentially all hard rock and metal.

For me, Metallica has been over for 25 years. This new record is, as I say, too little too late. And to make matters worse, its oldschool thrash peers are recording some of their finest work these past few years.

Over four albums they were untouchable.

Then it was over.

Take 2/3rds of Load, and 1/3rd of ReLoad... combine... and you would have had a great follow up to the Black album.

St. Anger has 3 three great songs that I still have on my lift mix, and Death Magnetic was hit and miss

Bunch of old irrelevant assholes, brought down Napster and general assholes when it comes to streaming their music. Dinosaurs who still believe people buy CD's.

They're too old to even realise streaming sites would be the only thing keeping their old irrelevant selves afloat in media. Their old albums are still among the best in rock history.   8)
Hate 'em and love 'em
assholes because they didnt want people to "steal"  their hard work?

Metallica sold out to the mainstream when they made their black album. I can't blame them for it since it gathered more fans and made the band more money than what they would have if they stayed with their trash metal sound...       "Master of Puppets" was the last original Metallica CD/album

This.  James' voice is gone.  Went six feet under when he went to rehab.

They are going to have to compose around it.  Plus, they bounce around from producer to producer.  It's a shame.

Ironically, Dream Theater keeps banging out INSANELY GOOD and catchy metal riffs album after album.  Granted, they fuck it up with their excessive prog rock obsessions, but the point is, if you got it, you got it.

Sadly, it pains me deeply to say it, but Metallica has lost it.   :(  I suspect they are buying their material.

Guitar tone needs to be a lot meaner, bring back the mesa mk2c+'s they used on master of puppets. There needs to be a wall of sound! I had a second listen and it's 'ok' I guess, a lot better than their other recent stuff but still could be a lot better. James' voice needs to be meaner too

Metallica died for me when Cliff died

I did buy Ajfa but it was a bassless, cliffless record

My sister took me to meet them in 83 at the stone. I was 8 years old n came in wearing an allister fein shout at the devil shirt

They couldnt believe how young i was. They hated the crue.

James burst a vocal cord during the ajfa tour. His voice was never the same after that

You're either a delusional fanboy or woefully out of touch with the contemporary metal scene.

If you like the new songs, great. But don't speak nonsense.

(Lars and Kirk are extremely subpar to today's standards.)

I like it.  You can't please everyone.  People always say that "old Metallica is best Metallica".

If Metallica never changed their tone or style then people would rag on them because "all their records sound the same".

When making music it's better to play what makes you happy because people will find fault with whatever you do.

The world is short on creators and long on critics.

My first Metallica concert was Master of Puppets. Loved the mid 80's heavy metal concerts. Thrash pits, push and shove your way into the pit nd front stage. James poured his beer over my friend and myselfs head at the Justice tour in Seattle. I as well as my then girlfriend can be seen in the box set Live Shit and Purge videos at the September Seattle show. They where always good live.
