Don had tons of heart disease deaths in his family... He was also obese prior to taking up bodybuilding in his early fourties. From AK too... not the best place to find heart healthy cooking. Pile those goodies together with all the bells and whistles of bodybuilding.... recipe for problems.

Looks like he would have died anyway. I guess that should be good news, but it doesn't feel like good news to me.

Kidneys and liver quit on him completely. The saddest thing was he actually did a porn movie with an insulin pump on shortly before he dropped dead in a train station.

Don Youngblood. I was really shocked when I heard he had died. He was kind of becoming a poster boy for age not being a factor when it comes to BB. It's the one thing about being a BB fan that I can never get comfortable with. The freakier they are, the more I love them. But if "loving the freaks" is pushing people into territory where they are shearing years off their natural lifespans, we all have to take a step back. I have been watching more of the natural BB competitions to build some perspective, but its so hard to know what is natural anymore.

I hate the idea the fans are driving bad choices, even though its the athletes themselves that are taking the step to juice and push themselves too hard, and the competitions and judging (and mags) are allowing it to happen. Messy business. At least the mags can write honestly about what they put themselves through and offer the most up to date advice on how they can protect themselves if they must BB on the edge.

It is definitely a dilemna. We know that what they are doing is not healthy, but we like the way it looks and we now expect it. Like you said, it is hard to go from looking at pros to going to natural contests. It would be like watching 1950's basketball games. I don't know what to do. Can the genie be put back in the bottle?

I always thought Andreas Munzers death would be a grim way to go. I think when it happened FLEX published a report/article from a German newspaper. Said on a flight from the U.S. to Germany started feeling ill and basically bled out on a gurney in the hospital! Everyone when on to blame his abuse of Cytadren for the death cuz at the time his blood wouldnt clot but who knows..

No I am in Kona. The dryest place in Hawaii. It has hardly rained here. The other side (Hilo) but Kauai and Oahu have been fucked up. My ex's mom and a multi-million dollar home in Manoa and it has been almost all washed down the hill. Kauai got hit really bad with dams breaking and stuff.

I used to work out at Gold's Gym in Fort Smith AR when I lived there. I would see Don Youngblood in there all the time about a year or two before he died. I'd never seen a pro in real life before then and was awestruck at his size. He looked like he was wearing football pads! He was a really nice guy too and didn't strut around the gym like he owned the place, even though there were pics of him all over. Then I moved to El Paso and about a year or so later I'm reading the Fort Smith newspaper and his obituary is in there. I was pretty shocked. I'm glad I got to meet him before he died. He looked amazing considering his age and how late he got into the sport.

Do we really think it is “sad” if we continue to patronize, encourage, reward, and support them for going to such extremes? True, they are making a free choice, but would so many of them continue to make that choice if there was no audience for it?

Momo went out of this world dying at any cost.

In some aspects....I can respect that.

It's a damn shame.....but he literally lived by the phrase "at any cost"

I think we are very much ambivalent about the matter. I think that Pandora's Box has been opened and we cannot go back to appreciating lesser physiques. Do we really care about these guys? Maybe we don't.

The deaths that hit me hardest was the back to back passing of Mike and Ray Mentzer.

But it really is a sad occasion to see anyone you know or talk about often pass away.

Especially if they pass away while still very young.

or a fire swallower

I dont think that is a good analogy. Race car drivers do everything possible to be safe. Those cars can hit a wall at 200mph and walk away allot of time. Racing is a very dangerous sport. BB is not a sport #1 and it is not dangerous. It is the dumbass's that abuse the drugs that make it dangerous. It in all reality someone who dies of steroid abuse is just asking for it. It is their decision to inject themselves and thus all negative repercusions should be expected. It is too bad that the same guys who abuse the roids and die do not think of the people they leave behind.
