Take the US and Australia for instance. I can see them being very close. The urban areas of australia are fantastic, but the more desolate areas are dangerous as fuck.

I've never heard anybody say that their dream is to move to Switzerland.

Good question and the answer is simple.  HOLLYWOOD.  People around the world have a few things in common.  Love of music, movies and food.  Movies, at least good movies are american made and based in America.  It gives a window to a society that they don't know about.  The love stories, the feel good stories, the action movies etc... are like 2 hour ads for America.  We don't see it because we're here and live it but for them it's fascinating, it's different, it's more free.  They see the opportunity in the films, the happy endings and they want it.  It's been like this for decades.  How many countries promote the "American Dream"?  Do you ever see Italy promoting the "Italian Dream"?  A lot of those people that want to be here move here, end up in shitty areas of the country not realizing how different American really is from the movies and then wonder why they aren't digging up gold from the street and result in shitty jobs, crime and other shit to survive.
