The thing about being over 35...
« on: January 10, 2018, 11:08:01 AM »
is that every bump and lump becomes a cause for concern. 5-10 years ago, if i got some sort of bump on my neck or in my armpit, I wouldn't really think twice. Now, when something like that happens, I'm on webmd for the entire morning trying to convince myself not to make a doctor's appointment.

Aging sucks, but taking care of yourself and genetics help.

But the point I was trying to make was just that aging brings out a bit  hypochondria in us. Or at least in me.  I used to always feel like "this will be better by next week." Now, a lot of the time I feel like "can I ignore this? Or maybe I should probably go see somebody about this."

Half of the stories of people I know (and people I've read about) concerning cancer are variations of "there was this bump that I didn't think was a big deal, but then..." There was a guy on an HGTV show who ended up getting diagnosed and treated for his cancer because SOMEONE WHO WATCHED THE SHOW tweeted him about the lump on his neck. That type of nonchalance is one the most fatal factors concerning cancer. But at the same time, nonmalignant cysts and bumps can happen. You just never know what you're gonna get.  :-\

I have a cancer phobia (and basically health anxiety), so I tend to go to the doctor a lot if I feel or think I have something.

I felt a bump on the side of my gum and went to the oral surgeon and it turned out to be nothing.

I likely have "Illness Anxiety Disorder."

Im pretty much just waiting for the day that I get cancer.

Sounds like hypochondria. I believe this is a growing trend.

Hypochondria is no longer in the DSM-IV-TR. It's now called "Illness Anxiety Disorder" in the DSM-V.

Didn't knew that. I remember a highly sensitive ex of mine who prob had it, though she had no problem with smokers in her home :-X

Hypochondriasis: DSM-IV-TR

A. Preoccupation with fears of having, or the idea that one has, a serious disease based on the person's misinterpretation of bodily symptoms.

B. The preoccupation persists despite appropriate medical evaluation and reassurance.

C. The belief in Criterion A is not of delusional intensity (as in Delusional Disorder, Somatic Type) and is not restricted to a circumscribed concern about appearance (as in Body Dysmorphic Disorder).

Illness Anxiety Disorder: DSM-V

A. Preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness.
B. Somatic symptoms are not present or, if present, are only mild in intensity. If another
medical condition is present or there is a high risk for developing a medical condition
(e.g., strong family history is present), the preoccupation is clearly excessive or disproportionate.
C. There is a high level of anxiety about health, and the individual is easily alarmed about
personal health status.
D. The individual performs excessive health-related behaviors (e.g., repeatedly checks
his or her body for signs of illness) or exhibits maladaptive avoidance (e.g., avoids doctor
appointments and hospitals).
E. Illness preoccupation has been present for at least 6 months, but the specific illness
that is feared may change over that period of time.
F. The illness-related preoccupation is not better explained by another mental disorder, such
as somatic symptom disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, body dysmorphic

So that's basically the only DSM-5 diagnosis that can't be applied to dj181...

I got my second wind when I was 35-40.  I probably looked the best I ever did.  All natty too.  I didn't begin to notice any physical or hormonal changes until I was about 46.

If you eat right, workout hard and get proper rest you can put off the effects of old age by at least 20-30 years.  Most people do not believe I am 51 years old.  I suppose I'll eventually get on TRT, but I'm going to wait as long as possible, until it's absolutely necessary.
