1988 Mr. Olympia. Wow!
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:10:01 PM »
I was just watching some YouTube videos. I came across the 1988 Mr. Olympia.

It made me think of that bodybuilding documentary that Tom Platz hosted which looked at the sport in the lead up to this contest.

It was held in Los Angeles that year.

Wow! Amazing prejudging. :o

I was never a fan, but Rich Gaspari won this contest. Berry DeMey is the clear runner-up. Lee Haney should've been third.

Haney's legs looked weak, especially from the back. Really bad. Also, no way near as hard as Gaspari or DeMey.

I've never seen Gaspari this good. I realize it now, Gaspari photographed terribly.

There are three pro guys who photographed poorly. Gaspari is number one. Samir Bannout is another. He always looked bloated in his photos.

Dorian Yates is the third. Totally different on video and in person.

Here is the video. If you want to jump, start at 3:30. Haney, Gaspari and DeMey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icONgoLUDec

It's these three guys and then everybody else. 8)

All I know is that I have new respect for Gaspari after seeing this.

Here is the bodybuilding documentary that Platz hosted.

Great old school pro bodybuilding.

absolutley that’s one of the best ever Mr Olympia introductions in History I brought that when it came out on VHS in 1989...the bodybuilders back then actually had personality’s...as did the 1990s bodybuilders, and if I recall correctly they actually weighed the competition OFFICALLY before the 88 O began...those weights you see on the captions are their ACTUAL bodyweights

HI Rich

LOL! ;D

But seriously, definitely new respect there.

I have a lot of old mags with Gaspari interviews and training articles.

His physique never grabbed my attention.

I'd read them and move on.

I don't know what made me watch the video and I have to figure I've seen it before.

It just seems so obvious here. A good case can be made for Berry, but I think Rich takes it.

Yep. It's in the documentary, J1.

It doesn't show everyone being weighed, but you see quite a few.

I was at the show. Gaspari was holding water at the beginning of the prejudging, got harder/drier as he posed. Haney still dominated, one of the best V-tapers of the modern era.

I remember getting that "Pump for Gold" or "Battle for Gold" documentary when it came out around 1989 (somehow on VHS).
Really enjoyable. Pumping Iron, then Battle for Gold, hard to beat for BB documentaries.

Those shitty Generation Iron ones are just putrid...

I met Lee at Gold’s Venice after the ‘88 Olympia. Honestly, pictures didn’t come close to doing him justice.

Haney was too big though and his body just exploded into poses, but i agree his legs were soft in comparison to gaspari and demay, still a worthy winner overall imo

It doesn't look like he was holding water in the video.

That's prejudging right there.

Even if it wasn't given to Rich, then DeMey is next.

I didn't see the show in person but I also thought Lee was a clear winner from the video. He dwarfed everyone else. This was the only Mr. Olympia since the '70's where they weighed all the competitors. A lot of people were surprised at some of the low body weights of the competitors. Strydom was expected to weigh in the 240 range and he was in the low 220's, Gaspari was expected to be in the 220's and he weighed 208 and Mike Quinn was also supposed to be in the 220 range and he only weighed 204. However, when Haney stepped on the scale and weighted 243, it was game over.

What does weight have to do with anything?

It's not a pie eating contest.

Haney dwarfing DeMey or Strydom? Don't think so.

He's not even dwarfing Rich.

Plus, each guy mentioned is at least twice as hard as Haney.

And Haney' legs were terrible from the back. Calves are just awful too.

From top-to-bottom DeMey is beating Haney in this pose. I don't care how good Haney's back is.
