Yes, it was a political mistake, but I don't think Berry De Mey would have won the Mr. Olympia regardless.  I think you could make an argument for him coming 2nd in 1988, after Rich Gaspari or Lee Haney - depending on whether or not the primary judging criteria was shape or conditioning.  The judges had no problem giving the title to Haney, despite him not being anywhere close to conditioned as Gaspari and De Mey.

That was one of the Grand Prix shows after the 1989 Olympia. Mike Quinn told me that Phil Hill coldcocked Ron Love and Quinn saw it so he grabbed Phil Hill from behind to break it up.

I remember reading about it in one of the magazine's back then. I didnt remember the article mentioning Love but according to the story Quinn battered Hill. WTF were they fighting about? I can't imagine Hill standing A chance against Love.

According to all the stories from quinn and love, it was a sucker punch from Phil.

Regardless Phil hill was robbed at the 88 Olympia. He should've placed much higher
