New policy requires on-field players, personnel to stand for anthem

TLANTA -- NFL owners have unanimously approved a new national anthem policy that requires players to stand if they are on the field during the performance but gives them the option to remain in the locker room if they prefer, it was announced Wednesday.

The policy subjects teams to a fine if a player or any other team personnel do not show respect for the anthem. That includes any attempt to sit or kneel, as dozens of players have done during the past two seasons. Those teams will also have the option to fine any team personnel, including players, for the infraction.

"We want people to be respectful of the national anthem," commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We want people to stand -- that's all personnel -- and make sure they treat this moment in a respectful fashion. That's something we think we owe. [But] we were also very sensitive to give players choices."

All 32 owners approved the policy, which will be part of the NFL's game operations manual and thus not subject to collective bargaining. The NFL Players Association said in a statement that it will review the policy and "challenge any aspect" that is inconsistent with the CBA.

hardly a ban.

owners will just pay the fine instead of being seen as unsympathetic(depending on fan demographic), or players will just wait in the tunnel\locker room till after the national anthem

No they won't...

And there will be no Jewish players in Super Bowl LII, nor Jewish coaches on the sidelines.

So where’s the Jewish rooting interest in the game between the Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles?

In the owners’ boxes.

For the third time since 2012, both teams vying for the NFL championship have Jewish owners — the Patriots’ Robert Kraft and the Eagles’ Jeffrey Lurie.

And for the third time in history, two Super Bowl teams with Jewish owners are playing in a stadium whose home team also has a Jewish owner — Zygi Wilf of the Minnesota Vikings.

Besides being an ethnic curiosity, the ubiquity of Jewish owners during the 2018 Super Bowl is a symbol of the growth in the number of affluent Jews in NFL ownership ranks, which is another signpost along the road of Jewish assimilation into U.S. sporting culture.

Sarna pointed out that many of the Jewish NFL owners are not just Jewish genealogically, but identified Jews who are generous contributors to Jewish and Israeli causes.

I'm for freedom of expression so I don't support a ban.  Also, I'd rather be able to see for myself who respects the flag and who doesn't.

The NFL is full of America hating, racist, entitled, unappreciative black men.  I think letting people see that is important.

There are rules in every area of employment or company, you don't follow them, you get spanked.
Glad to see the ban...

The NFL (Goodell) only did this (a year later) because it hurt their revenue. Fuck that clown!

That is TV ratings not revenue. Revenue goes up every year in the NFL. The reason that TV ratings are going down is because more people are streaming. Last season for example the NFL ticket was cancelled in Canada as DAZN bought out the contract.

I haven’t seen any hard numbers from the 2017 season other than the large decrease in ratings. The NFL is locked into their TV deals, so you won’t see an abrupt decrease in revenue in the near future, but it could come. This is obviously a desperation move because he knows what this means in the future. One would be a fool to not see the correlation between viewership and revenue. The ratings for the 2017 regular season were down nearly 10%. That’s a large number. The ones that are currently hurting from the NFL are the networks.  Next comes the NFL unless the man that has continued to ruin some of the best things about the game can save it.

How does Trump win? Lol

The NFL is allowing them to still disrespect the Anthem from the locker room instead of on the field.

Hell, staying inside the locker room may be even more disrespectful than kneeling.

Imagine not one player out on the field during the Anthem? That, in my opinion,is worse than kneeling because they are not even in the public space while it’s being played.

GTFOH!  That's like nurses going in the restrooms at hospitals and venting about pay vs. going on strike.  Fucking kneeling in your locker to a blank wall is more impactful.  GTFOH!

Seems you have a mental block about Trump. He has a knack for, even being a billionaire...coming down on the side of the average American. He understands his base and the value of a majority of public opinion.

So...as the news was making fun of him for calling them kneeling sons of bitches, calling him racist etc......he won in the end.

I'm fine with them protesting in the locker room but it isn't their fault that they do it there or on the field....it was the owner's fault from the beginning. You get paid millions of dollars there are rules and that shitshow that they put on was not part of the money making machine that is the NFL. Should have never happened.

You want to be a professional protestor that's fine..you'll be unemployed like Kap. Nobody wants to see it and it took the NFL a couple years to figure out they were getting the wrong kind of publicity. Just business.

ratings and revenue aren't the same thing. You understand that right?

He doesn’t understand that. He posted the link thinking lower ratings translated to lower revenues. Coach check out the teams values.
