Fasting
« on: December 28, 2018, 06:21:57 AM »
Anyone use fastings as a method to lose fat here? I know Wiggs does it.  The first I heard of a bodybuilder using it was John Cardillo Mr. Canada.  He was one of the pioneer HIT guys. First used two work sets per exercise then evolved to one work set per exercise. This was radical back then. Getting back to fasting when he was getting in shape for a contest he would fast one day a week he wrote. Thinking about partial fasting.

I've lost 20 lbs over about 6 months time while doing intermittent fasting 16/8.

Fast 16 hours and eat for 8.  Last meal done by 8PM, next eating period starts 12 noon following day.

You still need to restrict calories to lose weight.  If you eat the same calories as you were eating you won't lose weight.

Like any other calorie restriction plan you lose both fat and some muscle.

The fasting crams all your calories into a shorter time window so you can eat larger meals and feel more full.  That's the advantage.

I used MyFitnessPal to keep track of calories.  You need to weigh and measure all your food to be accurate.

Eat a balanced diet.  No weird food requirements.  It's all done by calories in/calories out.

Your body isnt always digesting food. The health benefits to this are numerous.

how do we know

its not like there's a whole population that been followed for decades that show health benefits from chewing during an 8 hour period rather than a 12 hour period.

Lol. Welcome back.

Fasting has been a part of human history from our very beginning. Modern food and fad diets have at most 75 years of history.

We're not talking about chewing were talking about food consumption.

I've read that a 24 hour fast helps flush impurities from your body as long as you drink plenty of water. Weight loss is easy for me. Weight gain is a struggle. Fasting to lose weight is not something I'll be doing anytime soon.

we are? i thought the whole idea was the eating window, not the amount of foods consumed.

Get better Wes. Stomach issues are horrific. I had stomach issues for 6 months of constant pain. Saw 4 gastro doctors. They all had nothing but tests. Gall bladder test, upper and lower scope. Very expensive medicine too. It finally cleared up and that's not thanks to the doctors. I feel nothing but sympathy for anyone going through stomach issues. The weight loss, pain, runs and no interest in anything including sex is the worst. Glad my issue is gone for years and I hope you recover.

It's all calories in/calories out.

You still have to eat less calories to lose weight.

The shorter eating window lets you eat larger meals and feel full.

You can't eat excess calories or the same calories that made you fat and lose weight.

I have done the 36 hour fast a few times for digestive reasons and skin reasons. aka leaky gut. i would have my last meal saturday night not eat till Monday AM. many skin issue are do digestive issues (aka leaky gut) then your skin fights to get rid of them.

some fast for 12 hours, some for 18 hours every day
some fast for 24  hours 1x per and 36 hour 1x per week...

also what is the deal with hard fasting? aka go 24 hours no food and no water? i dont get why some even do no water?

best advice i can give anyone with skin issues is to fast!!! i would recommend 36 hour fasting 1x per with skin issues

If you fast one day a week you don't consume a day's worth of calories which might be 3000-4000 calories.

If you are burning at least that many calories everyday you'll drop a pound or so a week, as long as you don't gorge yourself the days after you fast.

Nothing magical about.  You have to maintain a calorie deficit.

yea assume you do 3k cals per day = 21,000 cals per week
fast 1 full day you eat 18k cals per week = weight loss

plus the fact - breaking down  food is very hard for the human body.

again i am a fan of the 36 hour fast (and no lemon water or teas, just water only)

Common sense fasting is a good technique.

We all fast everyday when we sleep.

Breakfast = break fast

How do you feel not eating for a day?  Just wonder if a lot of muscle will come off with the fat. No doubt that getting very lean by any method some muscle is lost.

No, you won't lose excess muscle from fasting for short periods like 24-36 hours.

Anytime you lose weight you lose both fat and muscle.

I've done fasts from for example 9PM Monday until breakfast on Wednesday morning but I don't like those long fasts.

16/8 wasn't bad because you are asleep for 8-10 hours of the fast.

There is no magic to fasting.  It's just a way to schedule calorie intake.  That's all it is.

If you are allowed to eat 2000 calories a day (24 period) you are still eating the 2000 in the 24 hour period.  You are just scheduling the eating differently.

No magic effects as far as weight loss is concerned.

it was sunday whenever i did it, so i didnt train, did not have a full day of work so i felt fine actually.

my stomach, gut felt way smaller.

yes you will loose some muscle but most look better and feel better on the lean side of the line.

right now i am in comp mode so fasting doesnt really work for me - but when i am older i will def fast 1 day per week.

suboptimal method to lose weight and retain muscle

you will be in a katabolic state after about 8 hours without any protein
