First a snatch, than a jerk, oh my

Today Lasha Talakhadze set 2 new weightlifting world records

snatch 220 kg = 485 pounds (around 3 min 24)
clean and jerk 264 kg = 582 pounds (around 9 min mark)

video contains both snatch and c&j attempts



of course we have several getbiggers that put him to shame, but still ...

Really impressive.
Always thought the Rezazadeh record was almost impossible to beat.
And for 15 years was so

Unbelievable speed.  Just crazy. Huge man.    NFL type physique.  Never met him but he certainly seems very humble and likable.

Doing that at 6' 6" is mind bongling.
But Naim Suleymanoglu's triple bodyweight jerk is still more epic (3.15 times his bodyweight to be exact) at age 21

Getting really close to the mythical #1100 / 500 total Olympic Lifting scholars have gone on about for decades.

Huge guy 6' 6", #370, and still a bit young to boot at a few days under 26.

It’s on the cards at 2020 Olympics.

Lift #2 snatch (possibly even first lift) will be the min amount required to win gold, and 3rd attempt will be WR 225kg.

Same with c&j. If it can be won on first attempt he may go for 275kg being first man to total 500kg.

Such a feat absolutely blows away the 500kg deadlift by Eddie Hall. It would be a far far greater and impressive achievement (as any one how understands the sport will know).

He lives and breathes lifting 24/7. Typical day is started with 1-1.5 hours stretching and very light movements. After a meal a morning training session (usually 1-1.5 hours). Nap / massage. Then evening training around 2 hours. Massage / recovery therapy like sauna and ice bath.

Meals 5-7 times a day.

Possibly a day off once a week (or some do 2 days off every 10 days).

The C&J record is 266kg and is held by Taranenko who set it in 1988. Rezazadeh did 263.5kg (could have done more though) which was the record under the changed weight classes. Aleksey Lovchev did 264kg in 2015 but that was taken away when he failed a drugs test afterwards.

Talakhadze is simply unreal and arguably the strongest man in history. However, he's not getting a 500kg total. That's just too far off. Avoiding injury or failing a test, he'll probably go for a 222/266 in 2020.

finally someone marginally ahead of Anatoly Pisarenko from the 80s

he was so strong they had to change the weight classes and wipe the slate clean to ensure records would
be broke.

Do anyone apart from the Chinese do the squat jerk?


For performance comparison with best of the Soviet lifters, here's Yurik Vardanyan ,in the 1980 Moscow Olympics c&jing 222.5 kg(490 lb) in the old 82.5 kg(182 lb) class.

Offhand, the Chinese are best known for it, but Ilya Ilyin, David Bedzhanyan, and Kendrick Farris sometimes will use it. Bedzhanyan seems to go with a power jerk now, but was putting huge numbers with squat jerks a few years ago.
