You also have to remember that online and distance learning are very new compared to the classroom model which is thousands of years old. The former is going to get better and better and it will become apparent that it is a more efficient way to learn.

Millennial kids are so impressed with their useless degrees they rationalize their value. If you want to know its value look at your pay check.  No, it doesn't mean you are intelligent. I would buy that argument if the degree was in the sciences, math, medicine and engineering. I told my kids if their college degree didn't have their job printed on it they wasted their time. Two listened and are making great money and the one that didn't is making 50K.  Not bad but not good. Unfortunately even for crap jobs the people want to see the liberal arts degree because the ones hiring have one too and it's now the high school diploma of the 50's.

The trades seem to be the way to go. Talk to a lot of the trade guys in the gym. One is a plumber and he said he never advertises. All word of mouth. His business is very successful. Owns a house on the water with two new cars.  He said he's at the point in his life where he won't work past noon. A counter top guy drives a Mercedes. Welders in North Dakota make a mint. The handy men by me in NJ turn down work left and right.  They have too much work.

The guaranteed student loans are the reason tuition is through the roof. If they got rid of them watch formerly 50K a year schools go down to 20K because of the drop in enrollment.

I worked for 3 different companies that would not promote a person who didn't have a degree in something.  In all 3 companies the people who should have been promoted (smartest, best at job, best leadership) didn't get promoted for this reason.  The ones promoted had degrees in history and university studies. ::)  There is a huge bias against those without a degree by those with degrees.  Two of the three that got passed up left and started their own companies.  I agree, why work for idiots?

The trades can bring in good money but if it's hard physical labor realize that it gets old really quick unless you move up to owning your own company and hire others.  You don't want to be crawling around under trailers and in attics when you are 50 years old.

I worked for both IBM and General Electric at one time. No degree, no job was the rule in the salaried ranks. Then one day at GE I walked in and  we were told the entire  division was to be shut down in a month, laying off thousands of people. Many of these people were in their mid to late 50's and ended up pretty much unhirable at the money they were making. That's what working for corporations is all about.

I decided over the next few years that I was never going to be put in the position of being dumped from a job like that so I went off and created my own company. Lots of hours and sleepless nights but it ended up being the best move I ever made. It paid off 1000 times over.

I'd just as soon keep workin', though. Keep a little change in my pocket. Better than listenin' to some dipshit who doesn't know what the hell he's talkin' about anyway.

But you went to college Vince and are relatively successful, you have your own mobile home, several cars and even a Cadillac, multiple businesses and websites, you can handle angry customers when they want to speak to a supervisor and even won a bodybuilding contest trophy. Would you have made it that far without the college diploma?

As an elevator mechanic apprentice I am quite happy with route I chose, although it's very challenging mentally. The physical portion isnt that difficult it's the trouble shooting, and electrical portion of my industry i find the hardest.  The products are constantly evolving and it's a constant learning process having to work with European and American products.

Our mechanics make 120-140k a year regular 40 hour weeks. There is a lot of over time and room for advancement between other sectors in our industry. Construction, service, maintenance and modernization are the department's we work in.

That kind of job is too up-and-down for most people.

How do you find a job like that?  Did you just fall into it by chance?

How high can a job like that take you?  Can you go all the way to the top?

Like anything if you go above and beyond your wages worth in value companies take interest in you. Every job can can be looked at as human capital, and what you offer dictates where you go. To answer your question, I have seen mechanics get into management related positions due to there knowledge on practical applications and theory.

To get a unionized job as an elevator mechanic is extremely hard to get into. People with military backgrounds can get in through programs such as helmets to hardhats if there is an intake.  My union values people who serve and it tends to be a meal ticket for most. Other then that, its unlikely that people will get in unless they have prior experience or know somebody in the industry during an intake
There are around 5000 union mechanics in canada

A lot of options. I work with mechanics who are on call along with there 40 hour work weeks, which gives them a guaranteed 2 hours extra a day even if they dont get the actual call. Not exactly my cup of tea, but these guys are pulling in lots of money working the extended hours. Considering all OT is double time.

Mechanical related trades are a good investment if want to go the trades route.
