First time I heard this expression, my mom said it. She also used the saying "light in the sneakers." which means the same thing.

Or is it "Plays ball for the other team"? Haven't heard "He's a twinkle toe." Could be that's how the term "twink" got started.  As for shorts, There is "sugar in his shorts." and "light in the loafers."

These are all really light-hearted comments (which were said with a whink and a nod), as compared to the kinds of things people call one another these days.

I always use(d) "bats for the other team".

I remember reading a 1960's pulp magazine article on Weider magazines and the gays, and the writer wrote something like "These magazines cater to the swish trade". The term "swish trade" always makes me laugh, and I always try to use it once and a while when I know it won't cause trouble.

"Zesty" is a new one I hear black kids use. That one makes me laugh.

Not exactly terms commonly and historically used in the states, but they get the point across never the less. Shirt lifter? You got me on that one. How does it relate? Isn't bender another British saying? Matt Canning, who is Canadian, says this frequently.
