Many do start dropping off in the 50's and 60's, always a laugh how everybody seems to think they will live to be 80....

But how many actually do. Gets people through the day though.

I’d consider myself very lucky to make it to 50.

58 years old.  I train four days per week religiously. Rarely off gear these days. 245-248 pounds. Very strong. Still competing. Absolutely unhealthy. Feel great.

I know a couple of guys in their 50s that look great and train hard.I just never thought I would live to 50 and still don’t.I don’t feel early 40s either but I think eventually the chickens will come home to roost.

I'm 56, I train 3 times a week, stretch every day ( working on being able to do the splits ) and do interval running  4 to 7 days a week. I feel great, my mobility and the physical freedom I earn from stretching - I am never stiff - and recently a nurse told me she would have never guessed I was my age. She called me jacked . . . proudest moment in my life. I take tons of vitamins and eat plant based. I feel better than I did 15 years ago.

Fromm a longevity perspective, exercise ( movement ) is 50% of the game.

In general I lift 3 to 4 days a week. Run 2 to 4 days a week with strike training. I'm in my 60's and I know many young men couldn't keep up with me in the weight room or with cardio. I had some set backs lately with injuries.  One was my shoulder and the other an Achilles. I'm able to walk fast for cardio and lately I've been doing that for six miles at a time until I can run again. Until I hurt my Achilles I would have little doubt I could out  sprint the majority of 20 somethings in the 40 yard.  Now I can't sprint or even run at a decent clip but I'm working on it. My shoulder is feeling better from a partially torn rotator cuff the ortho guy found on the MRI. He has seen the worst injuries that can happen and he said basically I was lucky it wasn't a full rupture. The shoulder has gotten better from working on it. I think the fix wasn't the rotator exercises I was doing but the stretching and using corrective-joint safer weight exercises. An example is the typical delt lateral with a dumbbell. We are all taught to pretend we are pouring water. The correct form to free the tendon from impingment is to keep the thumb up toward the ceiling and bend over slightly as you do dumbbell delt laterals. Little tricks like that go a long way.  Several exercises can cause shoulder impingment inflammation of the tendon causing a world of hurt.

I think the biggest thing to be concerned with as you age is injury.  We all know the fat old guy who still has the big dead or bench. Trying to be well rounded in fitness should be the goal as you age and not specializing in a single rep max. I push the envelope too often and paid the price for it.

Interesting sentiment. I don’t feel old, don’t think old and I don’t live like I am old. The comments on injuries is accurate as I am always nursing something ( right rotor-cuff at the moment.) I began to think about physical limitations a while back and thought about kids . . . How they climb on rocks and jump up on small boulders as they play. I started to implement things like that and it really helps ( start slowly.) I also bought a skills ladder on Amazon and really enjoy running it - its a ball even when you screw it up.

Conservatively, I can hang with 35 / 40 year olds and it makes one feel great about themselves when their contemporaries can barely do a deep knee bend  let alone stand up then they are in one.

I think I’ll go stretch.
