I can't believe you guys are saying Levrone. Maybe now he's humble and down to earth, but from experience when he was still competiting he was full of himself, very arrogant, and not very approachable. To each thier own I guess.

I can't believe no one mentioned Lee Haney. I have met him on a few occassions. He is the nicest person you ever want to meet. I ran into once at a local Ford dealership and we talked for a long time as if he new me. He introduced my wife and me to his wife. He told her how I had placed 3rd at the Jr USA. The man ministers to people all over the country. He has a ranch for at risk boys here in the Atlanta area. These are kids who come from low income or single parent families etc. Its located in College Park. There are mentor programs available and the ranch is partnered with many churches in the community.   They offer outdoor sports, nature trails, outdoor camping site, hay rides, petting zoo, and horseback riding. The goal is to help these boys grow up to be responsible men. Lee also holds an annual event called Lee Haney's Ultimate Teen Challenge which is a competition set up sort of like a strong man competition/bodybuilding show. I am taking some of the kids I coach at my school to compete this weekend. There will be a truck push, tire flip, bench for reps, and teen bodybuilding contest.
I would even say he is the bravest bodybuilder for  stepping away from the competitive arena after winning the Olympia a record 8 times and taking on the role of ministering to people to try and save some souls on this planet.

Lee could be the most decent man of any major champ in the history of our sport. A class act while a Mr O and now he has Harvest House for poor kids, dedicated father and hubby and minister here in the ATL area.
Yes, Lee haney is indeed a rare gem.

You forgot to mention how proud you are of him in this thread...  ;)

Do you think he's a five percenter or closer to a ten percenter?... ;D

As big as Bob is, he's got to be a 10%er, or maybe even more :o

Kindest and Bravest = Fire fighter Porter Cottrell

He read a poem at the end of his training video. The poem was called "lord forgive me when I whine"

Lord, forgive me when I whine

Today, upon a bus, I saw a girl with golden hair.
I envied her, she seemed so gay, and wished I was as fair.
When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle.
She had one leg and wore a crutch. But as she passed, a smile.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.
I have 2 legs, the world is mine.

I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm.
I talked with him, he seemed so glad. If I were late, it'd do no harm.
And as I left, he said to me, "I thank you, you've been so kind.
It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, "I'm blind."

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.
I have 2 eyes, the world is mine.

Later while walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue.
He stood and watched the others play. He did not know what to do.
I stopped a moment and then I said, "Why don't you join the others, dear?"
He looked ahead without a word. And then I knew, he couldn't hear.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.
I have 2 ears, the world is mine.
With feet to take me where I'd go.
With eyes to see the sunset's glow.
With ears to hear what I'd know.
Oh, God, forgive me when I whine.
I've been blessed indeed, the world is mine.

Kind of ironic how you don't see a class act like Porter around the current bodybuilding scene much these days...hmmmmmm ???

I gotta back you guys up on Porter. We went to a new gym once and a group of young lifters were there to see him train and Poter saw them standing around in the back of the gym and went right up to them to thank them for being there to support him and then proceeded to sit down with them and answer all their questions.

He didn't even think about leaving them to start his training until every last question was answered.

As a result he made a great impression and a lot of new fans that evening.

Same goes for Gary Strydom. We were heading into a prejudging (Gary was guest posing that evening) and got stopped by a couple of guys who were definitely "Gary fans". That "stop" lasted about two hours with about 30 people seated in a circle asking every training question imagineable.

Gary didn't even think about leaving until everyone had exhausted all the questions.

Ditto for Larry Scott.... a great guy and a real class act.

Arnold when he was a real young kid. We got stopped on the street and carried off to a local hospital to meet a stranger's son who had just undergone a serious operation. Arnold was exceptional that day and the kid improved much faster than expected.

Mike Mentzer ....... One nite after a contest about 20 bodybuilders sat in his hotel room asking questions and listening to stories that still have never been published. That talk went on till about 3 AM in the morning.  (God bless ya, Mike and Ray!)

Gotta add someone who was the epitome of "kind" and a major participant in the world of bodybuilding ..... Joe Valdez. One of the kindest guys I've ever met.

Lots more but the above comes immediately to mind.

Talked to Dave Draper at the AC a couple of years ago. Very nice guy. Bought his book too. It was worth it. Good read.

Also talked to Lee Haney at the restaurant in the Hyatt. He was really nice. Asked him if he ever felt like he wanted to compete again and he said every time he steps out of the shower and he laughed. Said his wife retired his posing trunks. He did say that he was thinking about getting in shape to do a guest posing at the GNC show. Hey Wayne!! Would be kinda cool to get Lee to guest pose at one of your shows. Imagine it would be a sell out.

ya, Lee Haney is a spectacular guy.

I casually mentioned how I thought he could improve his posing once and after his Olympia win he told me that he remembered what I said and felt that it helped him win the title.

Great guy and so is Mrs Haney. Super people!

Another kind sorta chap is definitely Peter Grymkowski and I am sure a lot of your guys on here will agree with me.

He has been "kinder" to me than any other living creature outside of family members.

All of them, class acts. I hope 10 or 20 years down the road that people will say these things about some of the guys competing now.

Markus Ruhl is one of my top pics. About a year ago he was in town and working out in my gym. As you can imagine, the word got out quickly and people were showing up left and right. I clearly remember this little crippled boy who walked up to Markus and asked him if he could ever be a "muscle superhero" like Ruhl. "Sure you can" said Markus as he patted the young lad on the top of the head and gave him a bottle of deca. He must have spent 2 hours with the boy, teaching him posing and helping him with synthol injections.

man, to this day I tear up just thinking about that day.

Goudy, thanks, I almost forgot Pearl. He is probably the greatest gentleman in the bodybuilding world and I have never heard anyone ever disagree with that statement.

Bill is the type of guy who will go out of his way to shake your hand and recall your name even if he last saw ya 20 years ago.

I actually first met Bill while driving down the freeway at Camp Pendleton and honked as he went past. We ended up at the same place that afternoon and I introduced myself and from that day on he has never forgotten my name even though I only  run into him about every ten years or so.

I think Bill is the most respected person in bodybuilding. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm sure I'll be flamed/owned for this but Gustavo Badell used to regularily train with a guy with learning disability. That's a pretty nice way to spend his time I think. What ever else he says and does that is a class a ;)ct.
