In the current scenario, Germany gets the short end of the stick. They make high-end industrial products for which they want a strong currency and they have a low debt to GDP ratio, but they’re in a union with dead beats Spain, Italy and, to a somewhat lesser extent, France that need to be continually bailed out and have tourism as their primary industries and need a weak currency to attract tourists.I just can’t see a happy ending for the European Union.

True, but it's not even given a moment of consideration. This lip service that "if we can save just one life" by shutting down the economy it would have been worth it doesn't take into consideration the unseen and unrecorded consequences. Poverty is a health issue as well. When you can't feed your family and put a roof over your head people will suffer and lives will also be ruined and lost.Keeping a close eye on Sweden which is not shutting down and letting the disease run it's course.
The rest of his points are pretty good though. What does Germany do when demand for their cars amongst EU neighbours dries up? What does Italy do without tourists? Other EU countries like Hungary and Poland seem to be returning to dictatorships. The EU model has never looked more fragile.
