Arizona Gyms closing again on June 29th at 8pm
« on: June 29, 2020, 05:30:00 PM »

Gyms again closing for 30 days in Arizona, with NO data that gyms cause anything, but it looks good....

With viral outbreaks continuing, Gov. Doug Ducey on Monday put off the start of school, closed bars, movie theaters and gyms, and issued new restrictions on swimming pools. The closures go into effect today, Monday, June 29, at 8 p.m.

Maybe it is a ton of people from Laughlin in Nevada, and Arizona partying away...

Most people would get a better workout with calisthenics and bodyweight work anyway. 'You need a gym to be in shape' is a lie repeated by people who want your money. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people they need 187 machines and a special outfit to get in shape.

Eat sensibly and spend 30 mins each day doing things your high school gym teacher would approve of. Can you imagine if everyone in the country did that? Thats the message to drum into people. Not 'join a gym and hire a trainer.' Fitness isn't something you buy. It's something you do.

People who haven't achieved a decent body composition that way have no business walking into a gym in the first place. Most guys on the bench and pecdec couldn't do 50 pushups. They're loading up the leg press and couldn't do one pistol. Using $5000 cardio machines. Couldn't last 60 seconds of mountain climbers. 99% of people in a gym would make better progress in their garage with a mat below and a bar above provided they mean business.

What you suggest would make sense if people trained for longevity and health, but very few people actually do this.

Their vanity would be equally well served. Show me a guy who does daily 30 planche pushups, 30 chins, 30 headstand presses, 30 dragon flags, and 30 pistols and I'll trade my physique for his. He could probably hold an iron cross. I sure still can't.

Yes, Mr Olympia needs a gym. The powerlifter. The guy with a sport specific agenda requiring specialized equipment. But most people don't even have basic governance of their own body under gravity and just can't help themselves if there are cookies nearby, and they're dissatisfied with their physique. The Gym is not the solution for them, even though the nice salesman who signs them up says it is.

Funny you post this. I’m in better shape than I’ve been in a few years and I don’t have anything heavier than 15 pound dumbbell in the house. Just body weight and burning out and sweating. Thinking of canceling my gym membership. Best thing that came out of this was learning I could be in shape without lifting heavy ass joint killing weight.

Barbell devotees will argue, I'm sure, that a bigger bench=more in shape. In a specific sense, yes. But power movements are performed from the most stable platform we can achieve, since moving max pounds is the goal. I'd say the guy who benches less on the bar but can do planche pushups on straps is a better presser. He can tolerate an unstable position because his body is strong in every required aspect, rather than being cradled by a position which removes as many aspects as possible. I bet the bench world record holder couldn't do one pushup on gymnastic rings. The gymnast will bench less, but to me he's in better shape. To be clear, not claiming I can do it either.

Same with squats. Again, the most advantageous platform we can select for moving max weight. How about we de-optimize the platform and use less weight? Achieve greater control of the body and not grind our weakest joint involved into powder. Legs pretty much always operate one at a time unless you're in a squat rack, so lets train them that way.

I find it weird that guys who preach the priority of 'compound movements' love keeping the movement as minimally compound as possible by removing anything that requires the body to stabilize itself. That's weightlifting, since the question is always 'How much weight did you lift?' Gymnastics, by contrast always asks how stable every bit of you is, through every position and posture.

Honestly, if I was a guy who naturally put up big numbers I'd probably be enthusiastic about big numbers. But because my lifts suck compared to those guys, and joint issues plague me when I go heavy on traditional PL movements, I'm more about strength/weight ratio. I'll be way more excited to hold an iron cross (this is happening!) than get a PR on a lift.

PS - I'm sure you have a shitton of old trucking straps around, IG. Great for overhead work since they're wide enough not to cut into you.

Nothing beats the gym. Amazing feeling I get inclining the 70kg dumbbells.
I wouldn't get that feeling from just press ups

There is also a "In the zone" feeling I just cannot get when I train at home.  My first gym workout was on Saturday... trained chest and back.  I'm sore as fuk, but I love it.

It would be inspiring to the iron warriors of this board if you could post video of you owning the the 150lb dumbbells on incline presses.

Forum motivation would go through the roof!

You'll find that I'm arguing against the powerlifting ethos of training exclusively in the most optimal position, while never training to improve performance in disadvantaged positions. Not saying if it'll make you look better or worse, but you'd be hard pressed to find a bodybuilder who wants a powerlifter's physique.

Nevermind functionality. If you look better than an olympic gymnast then, by all means, post up your protocol.

Paid his dues = got banned / couldn't hack it on prior account.

No0b status is warranted, nonetheless.

This.  Just buy your own barbell/dumbbell set and it will last a lifetime as well.  Calisthenics and weights at home are all you need.
