I live in in Thunder Bay, which is an amalgamation of two cities - Port Arthur and Fort William.  The two were amalgamated in 1970.

The plebiscite choices for the name of the city were "Lakehead", "The Lakehead" and "Thunder Bay".  Only in Thunder Bay does 60% of the vote being split between Lakehead and The Lakehead, end up with the name Thunder Bay winning, LOL.  I think the Australian model is a weighted system to prevent stuff like that from happening.
