A lot of it was dictated by starvation in the early era- only rich people could eat as much as they wanted so the "fat" body type was desirable.

Once you make food plentiful it all comes down to fashion- which, as you know, cycles constantly - skinny - average- fat over and over.

Botticelli's 1480s Birth of Venus model is not in line with the author's perception of 15th century female body shape ideals. However, Peter Paul Reubens painted big butts, I cannot lie. And his contemporary painters couldn't deny that when a renaissance model walked in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in their face, they got sprung.

Looks like the majority here prefer the '50's.  There's a reason why the marriage rate was so high back then and the divorce rate so low. :D

The reason the ideals have changed is because survival is almost assured now whereas in centuries past a strong sturdy (fat, big boned) woman had a much better chance of delivering healthy babies and surviving child birth.

Nowadays some trends and ideals seem entirely manufactured. Like the disgusting fake Kardashian mega-ass. Could it be to elevate black figures who have bigger asses?
