I think it's just a cynical way to make it go away and not trigger a bigger backlash and loss of money. What's particularly irritating to me is how all these apologies are extremely carefully worded by public relations experts and experts in rhetorics. They are clearly not the spontaneous words of the celebrity her/himself. It's all fake. Even the outrage by the offended party is feigned, nothing but a power-grab.
