NHL Goalie Matiss Kivlenieks Dead at 24, Struck By Firework in July 4th Incident

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died Sunday night at the age of 24 after being struck in the chest by a firework at a July 4th celebration, according to local authorities.

Kivlenieks -- who was born in Latvia -- signed with the Blue Jackets in 2019 ... and appeared in 2 games for Columbus this season.

Matiss was at an Independence Day party at a private residence in Novi, Michigan when the deadly accident occurred.

Officials in Michigan say a mortar style firework was inadvertently fired in the direction of a group of people in a hot tub ... striking Kivlenieks.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene around 10 PM and transported Matiss to the hospital ... but doctors were unable to save the goalies life.

Law enforcement is still investigating ... but doesn't believe there was any foul play involved.

"At the moment, we're pretty certain this was a tragic accident," a police spokesperson said.

Authorities originally believed Matiss died of a subsequent slip and fall after the blast ... but on Monday morning, a medical examiner in Michigan said that wasn't true -- clarifying the firework caused the fatal injury.

The Blue Jackets issued a statement on social media, writing ... "It's with a very heavy heart that we share the news that goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks passed away last night at the age of 24."

"We are heartbroken. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Kivi."

The teams General Manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, also weighed in on the horrific loss ... "Life is so precious and can be so fragile. Hug your loved ones today. RIP Matiss, you will be dearly missed."

Charlie Robinson (November 9, 1945 – July 12, 2021)

He was  best known for his role on the sitcom Night Court as Macintosh "Mac" Robinson (Seasons 2–9), the clerk of the court and a Vietnam War veteran. Although his most frequent on-screen billing has been Charlie Robinson, Night Court had credited him as Charles Robinson throughout his 1984–1992 stint as Mac. In two of his earliest film appearances, 1974's Sugar Hill and 1975's The Black Gestapo, he was credited as Charles P. Robinson. Some of his credits have been occasionally commingled with those of older actor Charles Knox Robinson who, billed as Charles Robinson, was featured in numerous films and TV episodes between 1958 and 1971. In 2010, Robinson worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and co-starred in the film Jackson which was directed by J.F. Lawton. Robinson appeared as "Troy" in August Wilson's Fences at Southern California's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa from January 22, 2010 until February 21, 2010. Robinson died from a cardiac arrest and organ failure due to septic shock and metastatic adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer, at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 75 years old.

Cinderella Guitarist Jeff LaBar Dies At 58

The legendary rock guitarist passed away on Wednesday (July 14), LaBar was a member of the popular glam metal band Cinderella since 1985, when he replaced their original guitarist Michael Schermick, and continued as their guitarist until their breakup in 2017.

His son, Sebastian Labar, who plays guitar in the bands Mach22 and Tantric, shared the sad news on his Instagram late Wednesday evening.

“So i just got the call… @jefflabar , my father, my hero, my idol, passed away today. I’m currently at a loss for words,” Sebastian captioned a series of photos with his late Father. “I love you pop! ❤️ if you could, please share pictures or video of all the fun times we all had with my dad. It would be greatly appreciated.”

The Pennsylvania native and guitarist has previously admitted to struggling with alcoholism for years and even blame the substance abuse for Cinderella’s inactivity. Cinderella formed in 1982 in the suburbs of Philadelphia and in 2017 the band broke up. Frontman Tom Keifer stated in November 2017 that the popular rock group has no plans to reunite, explaining that “issues between the band members are beyond repair.”

LaBar has appeared on all four of Cinderella’s albums, including Night Songs, Long Cold Winter, Heartbreak Station and their final album, Still Climbing. In addition to appearing on all four of the band’s albums, he also appears on their two greatest hits compilation cds and their live project, Live At The Key Club. The band has sold over 15 million records worldwide.

The band has had several hit singles including “Don’t Know What You’ve Got Until It’s Gone,” “Somebody Save Me,” “Heartbreak Station,” “Nobody’s Fool,” “The Last Mile,” & “Shake Me.”

Additionally, he has also played in bands such as the Naked Beggars, Freakshow, Cheap Thrill and also fronted a solo project since 2014.

LaBar was born on March 18, 1963 and passed away on July 14, 2021.

Cause of death is currently unknown.

Gary Corbett Dies: 2nd Member of Cinderella to Pass on Same Day

Gary Corbett, a producer, songwriter and keyboard player best known for co-writing “She Bop,” a Top 5 single for Cyndi Lauper in 1984, and his touring work with KISS and Cinderella, died yesterday (July 14, 2021). Corbett, believed to be 62 years old, died after a battle with lung cancer, one day before his birthday. He was the second member of the glam rock band Cinderella to die that day, following the death at 58 of the group’s longtime lead guitarist, Jeff LaBar.

His sister, Mindy Cohen, announced his passing. “Those who knew Gary know that we and the world of music have all lost a very talented, funny, kind and gentle soul,” she wrote.

Corbett had been ill for some time and a GoFundMe page had been established to help defray the cost of his mounting medical bills.

On Thursday night, the members of Cinderella – Tom Keifer, Eric Brittingham and Fred Coury, wrote, “Late last night, while we were still trying to process the sad news of losing Jeff, we got word that our longtime keyboard player Gary Corbett lost his battle with cancer. Gry was a talented musician and good hearted friend. He toured with Cinderella on and off for many years. Our deepest condolences go out to Gary’s wife Lenora and his family and love ones. RIP Gary.”

Corbett grew up in Brooklyn, NY, and began taking piano lessons at age four. By the time he was ten years old, he was earning money playing private parties on weekends. After graduating from high school, he was part of Ian Hunter’s touring band.

Several years later, he enjoyed his first significant success, co-writing “She Bop” with Lauper and several others. The #3 pop hit was one of four Top 5 singles on her 1983 debut, She’s So Unusual, which has sold a reported 16 million copies worldwide.

With his first royalty check, Corbett bought a Yamaha DX7, and an Apple IIe home computer, complete with MIDI interface. Being one of the “first kids on the block” with these amazing new tools, he quickly became one of New York’s busiest keyboard player/programmers. After a few years of working in many of New York’s studios, he was finishing a project at Electric Lady Studios. During a break, a casual conversation with a fellow keyboardist led him to being hired for Lou Gramm’s debut solo tour. Before that tour was done, Corbett was asked to go out on the next KISS tour (1987’s “Crazy Nights”) to play keyboards. In between KISS tours, he toured and recorded with many other artists, serving as musical director for Debbie Gibson and Taylor Dayne. In the beginning of 1991 joined up with Cinderella, for their “Heartbreak Station” tour.

Amidst other work, Corbett continued to tour with Cinderella.

He was a Tampa Bay staple. Played with Stormbringer a local 80's cover band. Word was he was going to appear with them NYE at their concert on the beach. I went, but he didn't appear. Still a great show.. this explains why he didn't make it. If you haven't seen the Kansas documentary, it's pretty cool.

'Dating Game' Serial Killer Rodney Alcala Dead at 77

Rodney Alcala (AKA, "The Dating Game Killer") -- who killed several women in Orange County, as well as a child -- has died.

The California Dept. of Corrections made the announcement Saturday, saying Alcala passed away of natural causes Friday while hospitalized in a hospital near the city of Corcoran, where he was on death row after being tied to, tried and convicted over the murders of multiple women in and around the Orange County area during the 1970s.

His case is one of the more famous ones among CA's serial killers -- as the guy actually appeared on (and won) an episode of the famous 'Dating Game' in '78 ... after which his would-be date, Cheryl Bradshaw, reportedly canceled their plans after actually meeting him.

Supposedly, she found him to be "creepy" ... and in hindsight, good on her for following her intuition -- because a jury, years later, found that he had, in fact, been on a killing spree even before his TV debut. Who knows what would've happened if she went out with him.

Alcala was initially charged and tried in the 1979 kidnapping and murder of a 12-year-old girl, Robin Samsoe, in 1980 ... for which he was convicted and sentenced to death row. That judgment was reversed, however, in '84 by and Alcala was given a new trial.

There, too, though he was found guilty again ... only to have a federal court of appeals overturn the sentence yet again years later in 2003 -- and a new trial was granted once more. Finally, he got nailed ... and it was all due to the advent of technology.

In addition to Samsoe's murder, OC prosecutors say they found DNA evidence linking him to the murders of four other women in Orange County between '77 and '79. Later, he was indicted for two more murders in NY -- dating back to '71 -- to which he pled guilty.

He was charged with yet another murder out of Wyoming as recently as 2016 -- allegedly killing a woman named Christine Thornton in '78, who was 6 months pregnant. It doesn't appear as though that case was resolved though. BTW, several other jurisdictions across the U.S. either suspected or linked Alcala to murders in their states as well, including WA, AZ, NY and NH. His true victim count is unknown.

Alcala was 77 years old.

Jackie Mason, born Yacov Moshe Maza (June 9, 1928 – July 24, 2021)

Mason was a stand-up comedian and film and television actor. He is ranked No. 63 on Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all-time. His 1986 one-man show The World According to Me won a Special Tony Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, an Ace Award, an Emmy Award, and a Grammy nomination. Later, his 1988 special Jackie Mason on Broadway won another Emmy Award (for outstanding writing) and another Ace Award, and his 1991 voice-over of Rabbi Hyman Krustofski in The Simpsons episode "Like Father, Like Clown" won Mason a third Emmy Award. He had written and performed in six one-man shows on Broadway. In 1961, the comic got a big break, an appearance on Steve Allen’s weekly television variety show. His success brought him to “The Ed Sullivan Show” and other programs. He was banned for two years from the “Sullivan” show when he allegedly gave the host the finger when Sullivan signaled to him to wrap up his act during an appearance on Oct. 18, 1964. He had parts in films such as The Stoolie (1972), Steve Martin’s The Jerk (1979) and Mel Brooks’ History of the World, Part I. Mason’s act even carried him to Broadway, where he put on several one-man shows, including “Freshly Squeezed” in 2005, and “Love Thy Neighbor” in 1996. Over the course of his career, Mason also penned a number of books including 1999 autobiography Jackie, Oy!, on which he collaborated with Ken Gross.  He died on July 24, 2021 at age 93.

Courage the Cowardly Dog Star Thea White Dies at 81

Today, the Cartoon Network fandom is taking time to mourn the loss of a beautiful soul. Thea White, the actress who voiced Muriel on Courage the Cowardly Dog, has passed away. She had just turned 81 back in June.

The information was posted to Facebook by John Zitzner who shared a video of White shortly before her death. The clip, which was taken on July 25, came ahead of White's death on July 30 at 11:05 am. No cause of death has been shared, but Zitzner did note in their post that White had just had a surgery on July 28.

As you can see here, White is awfully cheerful in this video as she says hello to family. "Thanks to Susan Bookshar for recording this last Sunday, July 25 some 5 days after her first surgery. Wishing her family good times as some of us were in Chautauqua for a few days, contemplating she would join us later in the week. Her last breath was Friday July 30 at 11:05 am. 2 days after her second surgery," Zitzner.

For those who are unfamiliar with White, the actress is known for her work on Courage the Cowardly Dog. The actress, who was born in June 1940, grew up loving theater in New Jersey. She took that passion to the next level by studying at an acting academy, and she did various performances on Broadway. After taking a brief leave to celebrate her marriage, White returned to acting when she was offered the role of Muriel. She voiced the lady from 1999 to 2002 when the show ended. And most recently, White returned to the role in 2021 for Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Our thoughts are with White's loved ones during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
