Based on the history you related, by your late 30s it's fine to not fix someone. Expecting a woman to behave like a fully formed adult who doesn't need rescuing is not unreasonable, so when one arrives with drug or lunacy issues, just politely excuse yourself from her continued company.

The bombing of Dresden was justified. Just attacking the military wouldn't work. Towards the end of the war the Germans had the jet engine and a working jet plane. They soon would have dominated the air. They also had the V2 missile while they were working on developing their own nuclear bomb that could have topped that missile. Those two developments would have led to the defeat of the US, England and Russia. Unfortunately war is hell and you have to break the back of the people whose military you're fighting.
