Tom Platz and Some Old BodyBuilding Stuff -

The WBO coverage of the Platz / Hatfield squat off, with a few new angles -

.

The Platz / Costa workout tapes -

- Back / Shoulders
- Quads
- Arms
- Hamstrings / Calves
- Chest

I hadn't seen them posted before. Best part is how sloppy the form is sometimes, I respect that they didn't polish it up.

--------------------------------------

Also, this guy is putting up a lot of old clips, might be something interesting for old fans -

It is now.  I remember that Vince McMahon tried to pick it up in the early '90s, but it was unsuccessful and reverted back to Weider (as most things apparently do)  ;D

Those were recorded around the time I met and then befriended Tom.

He’s one of my original inspirations.

If I can say this without diminishing my nostalgic fandom, with the passing years I’ve come to be considerably less impressed with Platz’s training style. Even when him and I shared a couple of workouts back then, I was substantially unimpressed with his overall strength, as well, even considering he was no longer in his prime/gonzo gassed.

That 770 in the competition was NOT Olympic depth, either. I’d never seen that footage. I’d asked him about it and he said he did it but it was seriously difficult. Seeing the video, that wasn’t a good lift.

I remember the Squat-Off. This was advertised in WBF Magazine - Bodybuilding Lifestyles. They also used this as a promotion to hype up both ICOPRO supplements and the 1992 (and final) World Bodybuilding Federation Championship....minus Lou Ferrigno.

In both cases, Platz got more reps on a given weight; but, Dr. Hatfield got more raw poundage. Wasn't he the first to squat over 1000 in competition?

If I remember correctly, there was some controversy about his setting that record. It was something about his having his spotter knock the jacks down the instant he stood up vs. his stepping back and then squatting. Since there was no official rule against that, his lift stood. But, they changed the rule to keep others from doing the same.

At the time ol’ Fred was hitting his big numbers, he was complaining about not having the breath to climb even a short flight of steps. If I recall, he said he was eating buckets of cookie dough or something to get his bodyweight up. He’s not a terribly large man, so he was mega-forcing everything. Drugs included.

Never understood the hype or platz physique, aside from legs, looks like a bunch of body parts thrown together

Maybe the hype was more due to his charisma onstage.

Fred Hatfield was pretty old in that squatoff. 50 years old. He died just 4 years ago in 2017.

A function of the time, like most things.  Platz and Mentzer were coming out from under Arnold's shadow and no one had seen legs like that before.  Add the white hair no homo.

Seriously, as a gym owner would you put up with that fuckwittery?

I know a gym owner that would ban you for life for dropping a dumbell on purpose.

Loved the Big Beyond Belief program.  Best program ever marketed if you just modified the volume per workout.
