Capitol Police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt exonerated in internal probe

The Capitol Police officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt outside a door of the U.S. Capitol has been formally exonerated after an internal investigation, according to a department memo obtained by NBC News.

The officer, whose name has not been released, opened fire on Babbitt as she and a mob of other Trump supporters tried to forcefully enter the Capitol on Jan. 6.

The Justice Department announced in April that no charges were being brought against the officer. The exoneration by the Capitol Police wraps up the last remaining investigation into the incident.

A memo from the commander of the Capitol Police’s Office of Personal Responsibility says “no further action will be taken in this matter” after the officer was exonerated for use of force.

The Capitol Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BUT, i have no problem with her being shot and killed.

The original video i saw showed her literally climbing through the window as she was shot.

She was the only person attempting to do so after being repeatedly told not to (apparently).

I'm assuming she knew it was a bad idea to try and do this while armed police were pointing guns at her and telling her to stop..

My personal opinion is all of them should have been shot once they entered the building.

Just like all the looters and rioters should have been shot on sight.

This isn't about politics.

It's about law and order.

Not one person in this entire thread has brought up this cops training, the tactical safety that goes along with it, the cops surroundings, the fact there was no verbal commands or warnings before he shot and judging by his lack of situational awareness I would be hard pressed to even think he remembered the four basic rules of firearms safety which applies in ALL situations whether you’re a newbie, law enforcement vet or military vet.

On Monday, the U.S. Capitol Police declared the shooting lawful, and said it would not pursue disciplinary charges against the lieutenant who killed Babbitt. That follows April’s decision by the Department of Justice not to bring criminal charges against the officer. Neither agency named the lieutenant, for his own safety.

“An officer may use deadly force only when the officer reasonably believes that action is in the defense of human life, including the officer’s own life, or in the defense of any person in immediate danger of serious physical injury,” wrote the Capitol Police’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

“The actions of the officer in this case potentially saved members [of Congress] and staff from serious injury and possible death from a large crowd of rioters.”
