New York State has a closed primary which means you cannot vote outside your party in the primary election. Relative to that, it turns out the Eric and Ivanka Trump were unable to vote for their dad in the 2016 primary election because they weren't registered Republicans.

You can only vote in a primary forthe candidates in the party in which you registered.

If you register as an independent then you can't vote in the Repub or Dem primary.
