They "had obesity" lol. Weird way to say they're fat.
Obesity is defined by a certain level of fatness which is a BMI of 30.0 and above for adults and about 25. and above for teens.
On another note, has anyone considered how many the folks who post on Getbig are technically obese according to their BMI?
I am 5'10" tall and weigh on average 175 lbs. This puts me according to my BMI in the overweight category. If I can get down to 174 lbs. I would be in the healthy category. For my height, I'd have weigh 209 lbs. to be considered obese.
Note: BMI (body mass index), which is based on the height and weight of a person, is an inaccurate measure of body fat content and does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and gender. This is interesting because many doctors go by BMI to determine if a patient is obese.
The Army, Navy, and Marine Corps use a basic height-weight body mass index tool as an initial assessment. If a person exceeds the values. The next step is the military tape test which is the official method used to calculate a soldier's body fat percentage. Men are measured at the neck and waist, women at the neck, waist, and hips. For both, the neck measurement is subtracted from the other measurements in an equation designed to determine their “circumference value.” Unfortunately the tape test also does not take muscle mass into consideration.
Hydrostatic underwater weighing is the most cumbersome method of body fat testing, but it's also the most accurate.
