It's a textbook representation of what I believe was once called the "Defied Herd Animal" and in this instance its origins are based in Satan and witchcraft such as that practiced in early Salem Massachusetts and the like.  Cats and black cats in particular were considered to be witches familiars(hence the reasoning why it was bad luck to have one cross you path) but that doesn't prevent people from owning them today.
