Winston Churchill, far right, as a prisoner of war of the Boer Republic.  Following his capture, he was held at the State Model School prison in Pretoria before executing a daring escape in December 1899. This event significantly boosted Churchill's public profile and helped launch his political career in Britain

Maori chief Tomika Te Mutu.  He was a prominent leader in the Tauranga area, noted for his authority and role in tribal matters during the 1860s.  He is depicted wearing a traditional, full-face tā moko (tattoo), which signifies his lineage, status, and ran

This images capture a pivotal moment during the Allied invasion of Normandy, commonly known as D-Day, on June 6, 1944.  The photo shows an aerial view of landing craft and American troops going ashore, specifically during the initial minutes of the invasion at Utah Beach.   The codename for the invasion was Operation Overlord, which was the largest amphibious assault in military history. Over 156,000 Allied troops—American, British, and Canadian—landed along a 50-mile stretch of the French coastline to fight German forces. The successful landings marked the start of the campaign to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control.

In 1969, the Black Panthers launched free breakfast programs across the US, feeding thousands of kids before school. The FBI called it a threat. In some cities, police raided kitchens, smashed food, and urinated on supplies to shut them down.

An extremely unlikely traffic accident occurred in Lysekil, Sweden, the 19th of August 1961. It is the only known collision between a car and a submarine!

A woman adjusting her stockings by the light of a Goodyear illuminated tire, 1961.  The tires were crafted from a translucent synthetic rubber compound called Neothane, which allowed light to pass through.  Eighteen tiny light bulbs were mounted inside the wheel rims to make the tires glow brightly at night.  The project was intended to enhance vehicle visibility in fog and at night, but it never entered mass production due to high costs and poor durability on roads

The Construction Of The Forth Road Bridge. Scotland, 1961  The Forth Road Bridge spans the Firth of Forth in Scotland, connecting North Queensferry to South Queensferry. Construction of this iconic suspension bridge began in 1958 and it was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on September 4, 1964.
The project was a significant engineering feat of the time, designed to carry vehicular traffic alongside the existing Forth Rail Bridge.  The construction was dangerous work, tragically resulting in the deaths of seven workers during the project.

Warship Vasa recovered from the sea floor after 333 years. The Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in Stockholm harbor on August 10, 1628. The vessel was located in 1956 and raised from the seabed on April 24, 1961.  Following its salvage, the ship was restored and is now housed in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. It is considered the world's best-preserved 17th-century ship
