Before Tim Allen became a household name for grunting on "Home Improvement," he was a low-level drug dealer who walked through an airport with a pound of cocaine. To avoid a life sentence, he ratted out his partners and went on to become the comedian you know today.

Robert McGee was left permanently scarred after surviving a scalping at the hands of the Sioux tribe in 1864, when he was just a 13-year-old orphan.

Hundreds of young women who worked in watch factories throughout the 1920s were exposed to so much radium that they came home glowing in the dark.

The exposure often caused their vertebrae to collapse, their jaws to fall off, and their lives to end slowly thanks to agonizing battles with cancer.

After John Dillinger was shot and killed by the FBI in 1934, a Chicago morgue put the bank robber's body on display to the public. Thousands of spectators lined up to see the fallen criminal, who by that point had become a mythical Robin Hood figure of sorts.

Though there is little evidence Dillinger ever shared his wealth, he had fully captured the public's imagination as a hero fighting Depression-era authorities — as well as being a renowned womanizer.

A Mongolian woman sits trapped inside a wooden box as a form of punishment, 1913.

Women wear plastic headgear intended to protect themselves from snowstorms in Montreal, 1939.

A pile of American bison skulls sits at an unspecified location, waiting to be ground down into fertilizer, circa mid-1870s.

A man demonstrates a steel cap, splinter goggles (vision is obtained through thin slits in goggles), and a steel dagger gauntlet, manufactured for the British military during World War I.

When Wyoming authorities briefly captured the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy and took this mugshot for horse theft in 1894, his most notorious crimes were yet to come. After his release from jail, he formed the Wild Bunch, recruited The Sundance Kid, and went on to rob banks and trains across the Old West. Cassidy ultimately met his end in a dramatic gunfight in Bolivia.

Bertha Liebbeke was known as one of the Midwest’s most notorious pickpockets. She targeted well-dressed men, ideally those with diamond-studded lapel pins, by stumbling into them and pretending to faint, falling into their arms. This trick earned her the nickname “Fainting Bertha.” Her scam came to a halt when she was arrested in May 1903.

War photographer Robert Capa took this iconic photo of an American soldier shot and killed by a German sniper in the battle for Leipzig on 18 April 1945. The soldier became known as the ‘last man to die’ in WWII after the image appeared in Life magazine’s Victory issue.

Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov's spaceflight on Soyuz 1 made him the first Soviet cosmonaut to fly into outer space more than once, and he became the first human to die on a space mission.  He was killed when the Soyuz 1 space capsule crashed after re-entry on April 24, 1967, due to a parachute failure.  The photograph shows the charred remains of Komarov being looked over by Soviet officials during his open-casket funeral. Only a chipped heel bone survived the crash.

Joe O’Donnell, the man who took this photo at Nagasaki, was sent by the U.S. military to document the damage inflicted on the Japanese homeland caused by air raids of firebombs and atomic bombs.  In the photo, the boy stands erect, having done his duty by bringing his dead brother to a cremation ground. Standing at attention was an obvious military influence.

The Death of an Iraqi Soldier: Highway of Death, 1991.  The image shows a burned-beyond-recognition Iraqi soldier in the front window of a destroyed truck. The sun is coming in through the back of the truck and most of the surfaces in the image are burned and just torn up, so it’s almost a black and white image although it was made on color film. It was early in the morning, we had been up most of the night.
