The PNG format never got big, which is sad since it's way smaller in bytes than JPG.

No.

PNG is lossless compression, meaning file sizes are larger. JPG is lossy, making for smaller file sizes for images of comparable quality to the human eye. PNG supports transparency as does gif which is great though.

I did some background reading, and I see you're right on this. My experience was based on creating screenshots. When I choose the PNG format, the resulting image is smaller than a JPG one. This might be due by the default quality settings in my screenshot app, duno. Anyway, thanks for clarifying.
