A scold’s bridle, sometimes called brank’s bridle, was a punishment device used primarily on women, as a form of torture and public humiliation.It was an iron muzzle in an iron framework that enclosed the head. The bridle-bit (or curb-plate) was about 2 inches long and 1 inch broad, projected into the mouth and pressed down on top of the tongue. The “curb-plate" was frequently studded with spikes, so that if the tongue moved, it inflicted pain and made speaking impossible. Wives who were seen as witches, shrews and scolds, were forced to wear a brank’s bridle, which was locked on the head of the woman.

A mother puts up her children for sale in 1948.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chalifoux, faced eviction from their apartment. With no place to turn, the jobless coal truck driver and his wife decide to sell their four children.

On the top step are Lana, 6, and Rae, 5. Below are Milton, 4, and Sue Ellen, 2

Lana was likely adopted and died of cancer in 1998; RaeAnn was sold for $2 along with her brother Milton to an abusive family. Sue Ellen was adopted. David, inside mother’s womb in this picture, was adopted as well.

The mother went on to have four more children, which she kept.

This one is incredible. Especially the part of her having 4 more children later on.
