I think the man catches some undue flak for being this supposed "uber-conservative mouthpiece" when, in reality, I've seen him rip into McCain, Bush V2.0 and various others.
On the other hand, he generally is a loud-mouthed jackass. He's not stupid, but he is colossally arrogant and, when backed into a corner, more stubborn than a fucking donkey. And when he's unopposed, he is prone to play VERY fast and loose with any kind of fact. For example, I clearly recall how he mischaracterized creatine -- yes, CREATINE -- as analogous to "steroids and all those other NARCOTICS."
That shit is lame with a capital L. His staffers are perhaps largely to blame, but that he aired a segment in which he ranted about AAS and creatine as equivalent is bad enough; that he went on to liken them to
narcotics ...
Even on that count, I'll give the dude a [semi-]pass because he's no lifter; he doesn't know shit about bodybuilding, powerlifting or the other strength-oriented sports. When I worked for
The Charlotte Observer, briefly as I did, I had to constantly correct my higher-ups that "body-building" was, in fact, properly written "bodybuilding." That and other corrections probably factored in my ultimate termination, but then, '06 was the year the print media basically crashed.
Back to O'Reilly: I've no real affection for the man, but people like him are necessary. I think Rush is a complete extremist and I see little reason for him publishing his daily vitriol but, then again, that's Limbaugh's right per the U.S. Constitution. He doesn't yell fire in theatres. He might spew a lot of nonsense, but that's no reason for censorship. Since we've picked on the conservative lot, it's equally fair to say the more "liberal" folk in U.S. politics have said and done an incredible amount of truly DUMB SHIT, not the least of which is Mayor Bloomberg's insane crusade against, of all things, SALT.
I sometimes wonder about New Yorkers. Giuliani was near Ground Zero passing out gas masks and directing the recovery effort like a true boss and leader should. Bloomberg came along and decided people who smoke cigarettes and cigars have to stand hundreds of feet from anyone else outside, that drinking too much sugar was bad and salt was public enemy no. 2 or, at least, 3.
The first man was a hero who put himself in harm's way; he deserves affection and accolades. The second is a busybody who is playing Big Brother. Are NYCers blind to this? Are they so simple that they
enjoy someone telling them how to live their lives step-by-step? :roll:
