Irish Prisoners Given Condoms for First Time to Promote Safe Sex Behind Bars
Inmates at an Irish jail have become the first to be given condoms in a bid to stop the spread of STDs behind bars.
A lag at Dublin’s Wheatfield Prison has been handed contraceptives after he claimed he was having sex with other inmates.
The prisoner was given the go-ahead last weekend to be supplied with condoms in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the country.
It is hoped that the move will stop any cases of sexually transmitted diseases including gonorrhea, chlamydia and HIV from spreading amongst the prison population.
A prison source told the Irish Mirror last night: “Inmates do have sex with each other.
“There are actually no rules stating that they can’t.”
“Condoms are not normally handed out or given to inmates. It’s not that inmates are being encouraged to have sex by being given them, they are not.”
“It’s not like every inmate is given them. The supply of condoms to an inmate is granted on a prisoner by prisoner basis and is done so as a health care measure.”
“The move to grant the inmate at Wheatfield the supply of condoms is believed to be the first of its kind in an Irish prison.”
