‘I’m feeling sick just thinking about it': Mum horrified after her son discovers a spider in a loaf of HovisA question such as ‘what’s made from dough and has eight legs’ might sound like a terrible Christmas cracker joke, but it’s a reality that a family from Birmingham had to face after discovering a dead spider in a loaf of brown bread.
Mum Maxine Grizzle, who bought the loaf of Hovis Wholemeal from the Perry Barr branch of Asda, has said that ten-year-old son Amaarn made the discovery when he went to grab a slice of bread for toast, finding the dead arachnid sandwiched between two slices of the loaf.
The spider was approximately the same size of a two-pence coin.
Ms Grizzle said: ‘He was so upset. He said, “Mum there’s a spider!” and he went really green. I’m feeling sick just thinking about it.’
‘It made all my children’s stomachs churn. The last thing I want is my kids seeing something like that in a food item I bought from Asda’.
Although Hovis officials have said it is unlikely that the insect entered the loaf during production, Ms Grizzle has refuted such suggestions, and said that the package was completely sealed, ruling out the possibility of the creepy-crawly climbing into the bag during transit.
A spokeswoman for Hovis said: ‘We ‘take our product quality and consumer feedback very seriously.’
‘We have not received the product back from Mrs Grizzle and as soon as this arrives we will carry out a full investigation and report.’
‘At Hovis, we have high production and quality standards.’
‘Only by conducting a full investigation will we be able to identify the full facts.’
