2. Russia takes over, annexes territory, calls it a 'Republic' and is part of Russia.

3. Russia only takes a portion of the country.

4. The war drags on and there is a Syria situation.

5. Russia takes over, but rebel groups continue fighting, with possible terrorism.

6. Russia retreats, but keeps occupied territory.

7. Russia completely fails, Ukraine becomes a EU-candidate country.

I think they’ll agree to a ceasefire, and make Ukraine cede Crimea and the two Eastern territories.

Major Ukrainian city has reportedly 'fallen' to Russian troops

Russian troops have seized their first major Ukrainian city since the start of an invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the New York Times reported.

The port city of Kherson, located 126 miles east of Odessa, has a population of roughly 300,000, which would make it the largest locality to come under the control of Russian forces since Russia began its invasion last Thursday, if reports of its capture are confirmed.

“There is no Ukrainian army here,” Kherson’s mayor, Igor Kolykhaev, told the Times. “The city is surrounded.”

local officials reported that there were hundreds of Ukrainian casualties.

” Kolykhaev told the Times. “If we can make a photograph it makes sense to try to identify them, but if not we put them into bags and bury them that way.”

This doesn't make any sense.  There was no army to fight but there are hundreds of bodies and no one wanted to take pictures for war crime evidence.

That's probably the bare minimum  Putin would ask for.

Depends on his actual motive though. The 2014 annexing of Crimea gave Putin a popularity boost in Russia. Covid hurt it, so if it's just another boost he's looking then this would do it.

Russia could then say they ‘achieved their objectives’.

We all know that Russia, China and North Korea are friends. But did you know that India is also a friend to Russia?

Last 20 years or so Russia has made serious inroads into being friendly to India. 20x levels of trade over the start, and huge arms support. There's also some big transport and energy deals between them. India is in an interesting spot.

They've always been allies.

In the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War the US,under Nixon and Kissinger,sent its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier ,the US Enterprise ,to bomb India to protect its ally Pakistan ,who was losing the war.  The US only backed down after the Soviets intervened.
